BYAP at the Perth Royal Show

royalshow1The Perth Royal Show

The Perth Royal show is Perth's biggest community event attracting 400,000 visitors from the city and the country every year. With a rich history spanning 170 years, the show is an iconic social and cultural event which showcases WA agriculture, small business and entertainment.

This year at the show there will be a special focus on aquaculture and all of it's associated areas and Backyard Aquaponics will be there with a large display of working aquaponic systems and information. Calinda from the Woodvale fish and lily farm has been pushing for an aquaculture attraction at the Royal Show for many years and this year she got her wish. Calinda contacted us many months ago to offer us the main position in the pavilion and we've been working with her in preparation for the event since then.

The "aqua farming" display has been given a whole pavillion to set up informational displays to help educate and promote aquaculture within Western Australia. A stage and kitchen have been specially constructed for the event and there will be many demonstrations taking place during the event. Faye Arcaro will be giving cooking demonstrations everyday at midday on the stage, and there will also be yabby cooking demonstrations, filleting demonstrations, and much more. You will find information about all forms of aquaculture, from ornamental Koi through to caged aquaculture systems in the ocean.

Just what is the Royal Show?

The Perth Royal Show is an event run every year by the Royal Agricultural Society. The Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia is a member based, not for profit organisation, which works year round to promote primary industries. They have close links to regional agricultural societies and livestock breed societies. They support community and junior sporting groups which use Claremont Showground. They encourage regional and agricultural students through their involvement in educational scholarships and competitions which enhance the skills and opportunities of young people. The Perth Royal Show competitions provide a benchmark for excellence across a range of industries including wine making, beer production, dairy, food production, clothing production, arts and sports. They recognise the achievements of individuals through the Agricultural Hall of Fame, the Community Rural Achiever and the Rural Ambassador competitions.

The Perth Royal Show means different things to different people, to the youngest it's a bevy of showbags, fairy floss, and cute baby animals. For the teenagers it's exciting show rides and lots of junk food, while for the more mature people it's about seeing new products and services, it's about seeing the best farm animals, the best flowers, the best vegetables, the best food and generally to learn new things.

Theres enough to keep the whole family busy for the day, and it doesn't have to be expensive if you use a little common sense. Once you pay for your entry into the show grounds you can keep the family occupied for the whole day viewing the different events and pavilions, and you can bring your own food with you for the day. Also don't forget that there's a free fireworks display every night of the show.

It's a good idea to plan your day, check out the programmes so that you can be sure that you don't miss those things that interest you most.

What are Backyard Aquaponics doing at the show?

Backyard Aquaponics have a large display set up in the Ellie Eaton Pavillion, we have information boards with lots of information about how aquaponics works and how to go about setting up your own aquaponics system. We have displays of working systems where you can see some large Rainbow Trout and mature vegetables growing in the systems. We have a range of showbag specials, these are packed with information and we have a range of bags to suit every one.

Fayes cooking demonstrations are very popular, especially when she cuts up her freshly  cooked smoked trout, rocket and creme fraiche pizza
