Is there any benefit or advantage of a terraced garden/grow beds like the hanging gardens of babylon other than show?

Perhaps it is good for permaculture and sometimes a necessity based on landscape?

The reason I am asking is because I have an area that is slightly sloped and am thinking of having grow beds there. I am wondering if there is any benefits of having terraced grow beds in aquaponics?

The main benefit that springs to mind is the use of gravity: pump up to the highest "terrace" and let gravity do the rest of the work.
