Hi! I've been asked to look into floating vegetable rafts for tilapia ponds in my municipality here in the Philippines. I was reading earlier threads about rafts and people having trouble with the suspended solids getting on the roots. And our stocking densities are lower, 3-5 tilapia per square meter unless you have aeration or flowing water, so nutrients for the plants might be limited.
After some research, I came across this design from Sumatra that uses bamboo frames with plastic containers for floatation.

They put compost on the top, which might compensate for limited nutrients and give better growth. Depending on how deep the roots grow, I'm wondering how the plants would handle all the suspended solids in your typical tilapia pond. We would probably have to put some netting under the rafts to keep the tilapia from getting to the roots.
I understand this design has had success in Sumutra, and it's similar to what they do in Bangladesh with the rafts made of water hyacynth. It works in open waterways anyways...

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Btw, typical operations here are earthen ponds fed by streams or cold springs with water flowing in from a pipe and a drain to a nearby stream.

Wow, good idea with the bamboo, but definitely put a mesh to protect roots.
