Before I go down the road of installing another solids filter (which requires abit of a rejig of my existing setup) while shopping I came across a large chip frying shovel with a fine mesh.

Took it home and crammed it up into my sump frame and let it flow overnight. Next morning i see some sludge.
So far i'm happy with the quick fix solution. really easy to keep clean but remains to be seen how long it lasts.
Much prefer to rinse a sieve every week then to deal with these barrels - I hate cleaning my rff (i probably need to improve the bottom drain setup, but so far i've not to clean without disconnecting the barrel)
