Cleaning fish tanks

Wanting to know how does everyone clean their fish tanks, :dontknow:

as I have enormous amount of food waste on the bottom of the tank!!!!

i "vacuum" my tanks with a syphon hose when they need it.. that water goes in the dirt garden when it's not frozen

Food waste is going to make your water toxic.
It's a sign you're feeding them too much.

Why isn't it getting picked up by your pump and into the GBs ??

Easy to scoop up with a small fish net if/ when required. Like when too many people are feeding the fish too much :evil:

Yep, scoop out or siphon out as much of it as you can and add as much extra air or run the pump constant until the water clears up again.

You want to make sure you are not accumulating excess uneaten feed or fish poo in the bottom of a fish tank. You want to make sure that moves on through the system. If it is uneaten feed, you need to reduce the feeding. If it is fish poo, you need to make adjustments to the system to move the waste out of the fish tank. Sometimes this can be as simple as adding extra aeration to the places where the solids tend to accumulate.

Another vote for scoop it out with a fine net and add a couple of big marron, the trout will stay out of their way and they do a great job of keeping the bottom of the tank keen. But above all stop feeding more than the fish are eating.

Can you turn your pump on and slowly use a broom to push the mess into the pump? at least it will end up in your growbeds for the worms

Thanks for the ideas, I like the sound of using marron for the cleaning, I'm getting trout this friday :cheers:

Not always :think:

it does depend a bit on the size of the marron and trout and the size of the tank. Recently we sold a tank to a customer who was desperate to separate the assorted sized marron, as she had lost 6 trout out of the system in a couple of days.
