I have a system in the works I've been working on it on and off for a while RL was complicated over the last 2 years... How ever I want it ready for fall.

I bought a 4500 gallon water tank and cut it in half so i have to circles.

I sunk one in the ground all but 6 inches. I estimate this to be about 2300 gallons. going to use this as a sump tank

The other one is sunk in the ground only about 2 feet. So it has a good 4 feet above ground. using this one as a fish tank

I was looking at making wood GBs with liners or acrylic and silicon.

However a neighbor has 15 or 20 kiddie pools. they are semi ridgid each one holds about 90 gallons of water. 48 inch diameter and 13.5 inches tall.

So I'm thinking of setting up 8-10 of them to start.

Put a hole in the the middle bottom of each one for a siphon (probably Affnan)

thinking about a 2 tier system
4 on the top tier and 4 on the bottom tier.

have the top tier siphon into the bottom tier and the bottom tier drain back into the sump.

Have a large pump in the sump to fill the fish tank and use an overflow from the fish tank to fill the GB and make sure it can't siphon the fish tank dry.

I know its not very detailed but the neighbor just told me about the pools today.

As it is atm the fish tank and the sump tank are about 10 feet apart in line with each other, except the sump is 4 feet or so below the fish tank in grade. I'm not sure how to work the plumbing from the tank to the GB and from GBs to the sump, but I guess I have most the summer to figure it out.

If i did 10 pools that's 900 gallons empty So about 360 gallons of water needed when its filled with gravel. makes my sump and fish tank look enormous, good thing I don't have to fill them all the way up I guess.

Any ideas, or concerns?

thanks

might be a bit of a challenge to make stands for the growbeds, but sounds doable

Use the dirt from the holes dug to elevate the GBs. :thumbright:

yeah between the dirt and some wooden/stone structures i should be able to elevate them pretty well.

I think mostly its just the plumbing is going to be fun.

I may have figured it out though. one row in back that is 5 pools long have 1-1,1/2 feet between each pool. then a second row a foot or so down from those and infront of them spaced 2 feet apart. So like this

.A A A A A
b. b. b. b. b

So that way I can walk in between the lower level so i can get to the upper level from both sides.

Have the top level fill into the bottom level then have the bottom level siphon to the Sump so the entire system would look like this

S

FT...A A A A A
.....b. b. b. b. b

Atm I'm cleaning out my 250 gallon tank so I can start an indoor one also. just a simple over under tank.
