Could be usable, but really needs a deep cycle battery so it keeps pumping at night or during stormy times (when you are most likely to get a power failure).

claims to be able to run the pump for 4 hours based on head height... So in reality you might get 2 - 3 hours if its just being used circulate and splash water during a blackout. I wonder how hard it would be to Macgyver up a deep cycle to it.

Definitely possible. You could try asking places who have electric powered vehicles such as golf carts for batteries they are throwing out as they sometimes replace them early. The other thing you should get is a charging or solar regulator to protect the battery.
