I learned this from our Natural Farming group and did some research (AKA googling) and collected this info. It seems like there is a possibility to use photosynthetic bacteria in aquaponics.

–Photosynthetic bacteria are a unique species of microorganisms that use the sun as a source of energy.
–There are three groups of photosynthetic bacteria: Chlorobiacae, Chromatiacae, and Rhodospirillacae.
–Chlorobiacae which is a green bacteria. They can use sulphur.
–Chromatiacae which is a purple bacteria. They can use sulphur and sulphide
–Rhodospirillacae is purple bacteria. These bacteria can use hydrogen gas as an organic electron donor or can also use succinate or malate. As it is a non-sulphur bacteria, it is used in aquaculture ponds.
–These bacteria primarily live in the water
–They convert nitrogen in the soil into a form that can be used by plants.
–They likely generated much of the oxygen in the atmosphere and are the precursors to chloroplasts, which allow plants to make their own food.

BENEFITS
–Contains special active bacteria which can decompose toxic matters like the organic materials, hydrogen sulphide, nitrous acid, ammonia, and pond sludge.
–If raining, the pond may be easily polluted by acid rain. PSB can purify the water quality and increase capacity of oxygen dissolution.
–Increase the capacity of disease resistance.
–Efficiently decrease suspended substances and improve water quality.
–Restrain pathogenic bacteria counts in the water to diminish diseases for the animal.
–Rich in nutrition.
–Contains plentiful protein, vitamin A, B, D and carotene. PSB can support commercial feed which lacks these nutrients to enhance the body colour of trout and other salmonids.
–Improve the appetite and digestion of fishes and shrimps.
–Promote the growth of botanical plankton.

HOW TO MAKE
–2 eggs – beaten
–1 tbsp MSG - Mono Sodium Glutamat
–4 tbsp Fish Sauce or sea salt
–Beat it well
–Apply 2 tbsp of the mixture to 1500ml of pond water in a plastic bottle
–Close the lid and shake well. Leave the bottle in the sun
-The bottle will turn red with the bacteria
–You can use the previous batch as your inoculant for the next batch
–Aim is to get a red-purple colour for aquatic applications.

Hmm, given the "how to make" instructions, it is clearly already present in the environment. I've seen reddish-purple colours in my biofilm before, so those bacteria are already doing their work in my system.
