Hi steve,

First of all, thanks for the very helpful and well written posts - very accessible language.

In this post you provide a statement of unacceptable nitrite level, and a clarifying statement:

"nitrite levels over 0.1 mg/l should be seen as unacceptable. This refers to nitrite-nitrogen as measured by most hobbyist test kits."

My test kit measures total nitrite which you state is 3.3 x nitrite-nitrogen. Cool, so I'm clear on that.

You also provide a statement of unacceptable nitrate level:

"nitrate levels should not exceed 50mg/litre."

Is that total nitrate or nitrate-nitrogen? My test kit measures total nitrate and says that is 4.4 x nitrate-nitorgen.

Thanks again for the excellent posts.
