I don't have any suggestions for your system, but I do have some questions, if you don't mind. I am currently researching aquaponics in Africa and some insight would be extremely helpful.

1. Are there any pest you have had a problem with? (native to South Africa)

2. Have the plants grown faster, or slower compared to what you have seen online. (growth in other continents versus growth South Africa)

That's all I need to know, Thanks!

A nice neat little system Romalan.

How long has it been up and running for and have temperature variations been much of a problem?

I've never heard of Malawis and now you've got me intrigued. Are they a relative of Tilapia? Local fish?

Just looked up Malawis. Wow, what stunning fish.
They would be a bonus in anyones system.
