Ok time for some piccies... More to follow tomorrow, but Tomorrow we have ecofest in Gladstone. http://www.gladstone.qld.gov.au/gcc/index.asp?id=128
It celebrates World Environment Day, and we are putting up a stall with the QAL tent to highlight our Aquaponics project.

We have made a kit to demonstrate a stand pipe syphon in a plasctic container. We also have around 10 Red claw in our tank.

We have a pump in the bottom tank that pumps the water into the top growbed. The tank fills, and drains through the drain straight down into the bottom tank using gravity to be cycled again.

It works a treat and really shows how well the stand pipe syphon works. One thing people might not be aware, is that you really have to get the balance right in putting a hole at the end of the internal pipe so water drains, but not drain faster then the tank is filling. When we take the internal pipe out (drain out as well), the tank just drains instantly into bottom tank... Total cost, around $100.00 And Im not using a 120 Ltr or another 70Lt in that cost. So it really cost around $70.00. i could have saved another 15.00 by choosing a cheaper but more effective 240v pump. Ive chosen a 750/12v pump over a 950 Ltr/ 240 lt pump. Id recomond the 240v one but we are going to have a solar panel array on a 12 V system.

Cool, I dont think people realise just how simple the flood and drain system works... Once you get the balance right. That was something commented on by people who saw it already.

Ecofest

Today was a great day. We had a lot poeple want to come and have a look ar what we are doing, and I was also able to show them pictures, explain the cycle MANY times (you know what I mean and what that feels like...) and keep a kid from wanting to buy our redclaw.

If you look at some of the pictures we had on display, you would see that some of them look familar (sorry for any copyright), but I was also able to tell quite a few people about Joels site and backyard aquaponics.

Everyone thought it was a great, simple idea that appealed to both kids (redclaw) and adults alike.

A few poeple said they wanted to go home and try it, along witheven the local member coming up and having a look.

It was great to fly the AP flag and get the community involved and I would encourage everyone to look at ecofests in their own area, make a basic kit and use it to educate the community. Its one of the great goals of our school.

I was also really happy that one of my old lecturers came on by and gave me the name of the guy at my old Uni, CQU, as they do AP at uni... not bad... creating links !

:rr:
