: squeal :

My wishes came true!

Fairies have started dropping blue barrels on my front yard....could this be an indication of things to come?

Hmm,

It appears my barrels don't have bungs in them. If the barrel fairy can't locate them I will have to try plumbing into the bung holes. I read that tclynx has done it with standard fittings. Hopefully I can find similar (50mm?) fittings for the fine thread bung hole. And put the coarse thread bung towards the top as an over flow/ breather (barrels on side).

Looks like the lawn fairy visited the barrel fairy's front yard on the weekend.

Of the barrel or the lawn? Hehe. I'll take a pic tomorrow. Will be dark when I get home tonight.

Apparently third and final barrel will arive Thursday.

Bought timber for gb frames on weekend.

What type of timber did you buy? Be mindful of leaching toxins when it rains.

Looks like a good set up.

This I reckon would be worth a photo, especially if the fairy is still in it :)

I got treated pine...hmm didn't think about that, but I really doubt the water from timber will ente the system, especially if I put the green house over the top like I plan.

On closer inspection finding compatible plumbing for all the bung holes might be too much trouble, and I will have to just block them up some how and plumb through the barrel wall. Any suggestions on what to block the wholes with, other than finding three different threaded/dimension bungs?

Here are some pics of the two barrels I have so far anyway. The front barrel has one hole around 55mm Minor Diametre with thread spacing of 2mm, the other hole is about 60mm Minor D with coarse ~6mm thread spacing. The hole on the back barrel with the missing bung if different yet again! ~70m Minor D ~6mm spacing.

growth update for small system. 8 days since last pics. growth is impressive.

The second batch of letuce is cracking along now (bottom left), and some of the carrots have germinated (bottom right, in cotton). Most of everthing else is on to their second branch on leaves. The early leader, basil, has now gone lazy and is making slow progress (bottom right). The over crowed tomattos (top left) are storming along, and the established tomatto has easily trippled in size since planted, and flowered. But the real heros are the beans and zuchini (top right), I'm amazed at how much they grow each day.

I started building my large system today.

Cut IBC liner and cage into FT and GB.

finished product...will screw the top bars i got off IBC cage onto bottom of GB cage later to act as extra support (not the only supports though).

After adding a 50-60mm diameter SLO through FT wall I should have around 750L tank. GB depth is around 24-25cm making approx 250-280L.

In regard to your bung hole dilema, if you have access to free barrels maybe you could just cut the tops off and add more to achieve the volume you need. If you connected them via overflows and put your sump pump in the last one in line the others could act as solids traps also.
Additionally the tops of the barrels could be used as covers to limit light and critters from getting in.

Thanks,

I think I get what you mean.

I did think about plumbing them standing straight up and down (bung holes at top), but to get them to fit under my grow beds like in my design diagram I would have to dig pretty hefty holes through my clay soil. Our housing estate is built on an old brick works site. I learnt my leason from digging the sub-surface drainage down the side of my house. Where I can avoid digging I will!

Turns out all should be okay now. The barrel fairy rustled up a bag of various bungs he found in the junk pile and it looks like I will have enough matches to plug all but one of the holes. I'll then plumb throught the walls/lid and use the open hole as the sump overflow.

Too much other stuff to do this weekend. Significant progress on AP system will have to wait till next weekend.
