Yeah I might have heard it from you about using vaseline, don't want that in the fish water either though.

It was this stuff:
http://www.amazon.com/Tanglefoot-300000 ... B000BOC4MW

Heh, says non-toxic there, didn't sound non-toxic on the bottle to me...

Polybutene is used in cosmetics, so now I'm confused. I guess I'll fish it out of the trash can.

Swiss (or rainbow chard) can be cooked like spinach. However, the young leaves make a good substitute for lettuce in salads.

EHE: Early Harvest Event

Went to feed the fish this morning and found many of them belly-up. The water temp was 77+F/25C, it never cooled down last night, at 8:30 in the morning it was 85F/29C degrees outside.

I knew they would not be long for this world with the temperatures reaching normal Summer highs. Guess the water temp limit is around 75 or so for them. The largest were large enough to eat; I had thought there was no hope of them getting big enough to eat before the temps got them. Maybe in the future I would harvest around mid-June before they self-harvest. I am also missing some thermal control devices, etc. that might help the water stay cooler longer, but July would be a big challenge anyway.

Took four of the largest and cut their heads off and gutted them, plan to grill them tonight! Not smelly so I think they are OK. The largest one's skin has pale patches where I think it had fungus earlier in the year then recovered. Have read that you can scale them or not, depending on if you want to eat the skin. Has anyone here eaten them with the skin on without scaling?

At least six other smaller ones were in the FT either on the bottom or around. The koi had been nibbling on them since I didn't feed them this morning. Several got pulled into the air lifts and clogged them, one got near the one water pump and blocked it.

Dinner for tonight, it was really simple to prepare them, much easier than filleting like I did with the tilapia a long time ago.

Too hot outside, dumped a few more trout on the compost pile and watered the plants. Lots of ants making homes in the net pots. Now that the tanglefoot stuff is on the posts they can't get off of there, but there are plenty of ants to farm aphids if they want to do that. I dumped the pots in water to get them drowned and uncomfortable somewhat. Trout from yesterday are thawing out for grilling for lunch today.

Not much going on, except I had my first two AP tomatoes to eat yesterday. Big thick slices of farmer's market bread, mayonnaise, salt and pepper, mmmmm!

Dave,
I've eaten alot of trout and never skinned or scaled any of them. I just mix white flour and corn meal 50/50 put in some pepper, mix it well and roll the trout in it just before frying in oil. The skin is my favorite part.
