I cant figure out what I'm looking at in the picture called "cheap plumbing 2c.JPG".

It looks like aluminium shavings from the drill hole.

It is the shaving of poli tray where the hole was made.
It is just reflection that made it look like metal.

Great work so far. Your setup looks awesome.
I have only been looking into Aquaponics for 2 days now. Last night I spent reading info and watching youtube videos. Today I went and looked at some barrels,IBC's and tanks trying to work out which way to go about it.
Tonight I have read through your entire post and found a lot of information that will come in handy if i ever get my system up and running. Thankyou for posting such details info of your progress I have found it a pleasure to read.

Is there any chance birds or something are trying to get your goldfish?

Hi crankygecko,

Thanks for your complement. Like everyone, i have said the same to other member's reports. You will find many great sites in this forum.
As for birds, no bird problem because of pergola and shade cloth.

Good luck with your try.

http://www.fishdoc.co.uk/disease/fungus.htm

Topical treatments:

Use strong malachite green solution (100mg/ litre) to clean the lesion and apply a water-proof cream.
Potassium permanganate can be made into a paste and rubbed onto the lesion. Be careful of your eyes!

Long-term bath treatments:

Salt: 1–5g / litre indefinitely
Malachite green: 0.10mg/litre – three treatments at three-day intervals
Potassium permanganate at 3-4 ppm every fourth day for four treatments with hydrogen peroxide reversal.
------------
Just trying salt bath. I was told not to use table salt, so i got pool salt.
It was strangely cheap about $5.5 for a20kg bag!

The UK site info above says 1-5g per litre. That is a lot. That means 50-250 g for a 50L container.
I think I used only 20g. I should try at least 5 times stronger.

last night, i decided to give all fish salt bath, not only the ones obviously affected by fungus.
How to catch fish a five metre long pond?
My wife and i tried for two hours at 9pm, and got all wet.

The friendly gold fish that come to greet me any time must have had a terrible experience. Never trust humans again! The big ones were fast and smart, and were difficult to catch. But after two hours of trying, it became too difficult as the numbers in the pond became fewer. So, we quit. I thought we caught the majority, perhaps 90%.
But this morning, i found still about 20 fishes in pond, greeting me as usual. Do they have a short memory? I like people who forget about the fight they had. The same for animals and fish. May be short memory means less loyalty too. Humm.

For the group of about 6 small gold fish with open wound, i will continue keeping them for a week in a small container with salted water. The other fish that i caught, probably about a hundred,
and placed in a larger 50L container with salted water, i will keep them in there another day, then put them back in pond. Water becomes dirty very quickly when 100 fish, even gold fish, are placed in a 50L container even though i put an airator. I have to keep changing water every couple of hours to prevent water becoming too dark.

There are always these little(?) dramas in raising fish.

It's scary putting all that salt in isn't it.

It seems crazy.

Yes, very scary since i put nearly all of my fish in ths trial treatment without previous experience.
I now put the larger group of fish back to pond. I hope this strong salt bath of one and half day will help them against spread of fungus.

The smaller group of badly affected fish, about 7, will continue in salt water for another couple of days.
I am observing whether healing is taking place in wounded areas.

The grow bed that was placed at a high height seem to be exposed to bird attack even though I never saw them near my pergola.
One of the two grow beds in the high shelve was planted with seedlings of various vegies.
The crunch ones, cauliflower and bok choi, were damaged by what seems to be a bird eating. The scale of damage was too big to have been attacked by insects.

What to do about this?
May need shade cloth on this side.
I am also thinking of vynile cover to make it work like a green house for winter.

As one of the attempts to grow trees in AP way, I bought a blackberry tree (?) on sales. I had read that berries give fruit year round.
It was expensive, $7 at 50% sale for a left over one.
It did not look good, but I assumed it would become healthy once I put in my AP growbed. I put it at one corner of growbed forseeing that it will grow tall.
But even after one week, the look did not change much.
Will this one become healthy and grow fruit?

If it's a blackberry and it dies, it may be the first time anyone has ever managed to kill one in the history of South Australia :)

Blackberry is a terrible weed all through the Adelaide hills because it doesn't die, even when a goat eats to bare earth, then you set a huge fire on the spot where it was, then let the goat back on the spot to eat the shoots that for some reason still come back. But it wont fruit all year. I cant remember what time of year it is but there is definitely a blackberry season. The fruit is spread out over a month or so.

I cant remember If I mentioned it, but I meant to say the same about strawberries in reply to a post you made where you said they were not fruiting.

Traditionally, strawberries fruit once a year, and there are some new varieties (ever-bearers???) that have two seasons a year. The fruit is spread out for a while each time they fruit, so you can see fruit for a few months a year.

My only surviving strawberry plant from my towers (they went too long without water) managed to squeze out a few fruit for the second time in a year, but I dont know what the others would have done.

Yes, blackberry is regarded as weed, I found.
Then it cannot be blackberry since it was selling for $14 per pot. Cannot sell weed at that price. Wonder what it was. It was berry of a kind.

It will interesting to find out :)

Even if it's blackberry, they are very good to eat, and make amazing jam.

Each year that we lived on the farm the same people would come to the property and pick blackberries from along the roadside frontage to make jam.

I've also made some really nice jam from them, and ate plenty straight from the bushes. They grow a bit like a wild rose. as a shrub but with long stems. I think the english used them to make living fences by tangling the stems to each plant in rows. The plants have sharp thorns on the branches so it should be easy to identify before long.

Our goat would eat the branches and the thorns, but leave the fruit. Goats are even stranger than humans when it come to the crap they call food.
