The fish eat all the fall in the water. I have a 1500gallon tank sitting around doing nothing, so im gonna make a growbed system soon.
Image
all the water lettice and hyacynth is dead, just mint and watercress now. the greenhouse frame is fine, but the plastic got shredded. it has benn getting over 110f everyday here, and down to 70f at night. water temp is staying at about 75f. burying the tank 1 foot in the groung has kept the temps stable. the bluegill have bred again, but I lost most of the fry again. gotta fugure out a breeding thingy. Im going to add about 100 goldfish in floating net cages to help keep the water fertile till I get more bluegill.

Hi Meanie

What is the PH of your water supply? My well runs PH 8.0. When I bring in new fish I have to lower that to close to 7.0 or they all die in a few days from the shock. Yes, I do float the bag to even out the temp for an hour but they die anyway. I use garden gypsum to lower the PH and I salt new fish in an isolation tank. I have better survival rate if the clerk puts some slime protector in the bag.

Water cress is reportedly a cool water plant. I have been wating untill fall to try some. I have read that you can take water cress from the grocery store and soak it untill it roots then put in your system. Will that work?

Water cress grows really well at 38 deg c. And 10 deg c it still does alright.

I've heard that water cress (like mint) will take over the world if you let it, especially if the world is wet. With mint, the world doesn't even need to be that wet. I've removed mint from a couple of the regular grow beds where I had planted it to use up Nitrates early on. I didn't remove it well enough and I keep seeing little mint sprigs popping up. From now on, I only plant mint it isn't own, small grow bed where it can take over and be trapped.

:D looks like my next system will be for tilapia, after a year and lots of calls and writing, I will be getting a permit for tilapia. All that is left is for NDOW to inspect my property for any way the fish may escape. I live 15 miles from the closest stream(that gets ice on it in the winter) so I think Im gonna be good to go. 8)

last time I tested it was 7.2, the water is very hard here. The heat kills my watercress about june. I got mine from a stream in the hills about 20 miles from me and 6,000 feet higher. I think as long as the cress is still alive it will root?

Good luck man, it sounds, very likely to happen for you. They might nitpick something small, to flex but you sound far and dry.

So, MC, what happened with the tilapia permitting? Any news?

p.s. Where did you get that 1500 gallon black tank from? I like the shapes of that and your dirt beds.

Went ok I think, the lady that came out said she would like for me to put a fence around the system, and lock up the fish somehow. the only issue is security, as like someone may steal the fish and let them go 100 miles south where the water stays warmer? she seemed very interested in my idea to make a food making yard. From what I understand they have to give me a permit, and even if I dont get a permit the most they can do is take the fish, only after asking judge. nothing in the law here allows them to do anything to me. Im still gonna get the permit though. I dont think she will know the differnce from a blugill or tilapia though. kinda bothers me that the people who are in charge of permiting something know so little about it. Im suposed to hear back soon. Even though she wants me to build a fence, nothing says I have too. I think I will though, if a army of zombies rise from the dead, I want my tilapia to be safe.

I got the tank at a farm supply place, the same one I got the other tank from. I got a deal on the black tank cuz it had a hole from a forklift. easy fix it was.
