Hello all,

Its been a few weeks since i joined this forum and wanted to share where i'm at with my system. It is a bit of a mix-up of a few designs that i have seen floating around:

I have a 1,000Lt IBC as the FT and another as the ST ( ST only running at approx 600Lt ). I am using three 205Lt blue drums cut in half lengthways as the grow beds.

I am using a 550W Submersible pump in the ST to feed the FT, with gravity feeding the water onto the GB's and in turn flowing back to the ST.

I have used expanded clay as my growing medium and so far only have 10 goldfish in the FT to start the cycle process.

So far in the water testing PH has become slightly more alkaline ( from 7.8 to 8 ), Ammonia has risen to 0.25, Nitrites and Nitrates are still at zero.

I had the system running for a week before i added fish ( to cycle out the chlorine from the tap water ), grow bed media and plants. All seems to be going well so far.

Will add pictures as i figure out how to do it.

 You might want to check that wattage. We have 3000 and 4500 litre per hours pumps that are only 65w. Running costs are ongoing so you may be able to save some money in the long term.

Look forward to seeing your photos Timbo and welcome to the forum :)

Thanks :D . Got the pump for $40 and plan on having the whole system running off the grid. Have a mate in solar install who managed to get me some super cheap panels and i'm a sparkie so the hookup wont cost me anything other than parts ;)

I like the grow bed construction, what size steel are you using there?

I'm currently gathering ideas for my own install which will be IBCs and blue drums so the more info I can get, the better.

Port_huon:

The tubing is 25mm tubelok. It is an aluminum product that i found at a disposal store in Adelaide, SA for about $8/3m length. It was super easy to use and i just added the timber decking frame work for stability.

Thanks :D

GB media is in ( expanded clay from the local hydroponics store ). Also found a way to get my excess water from the pump to suck air into the back feed and aerate the water...

what type of roof screws are they ? galvanized?
Do you have to have bell siphon with blue barrels? or can you have timed flood and drain?
Can you explain the airator in your sump a little more?

Nice!

Very nice!

The clear plastic tubes get a build of algae if they are in sunlight, so if they are clear to make it so you can check flow, it might be worth slitting a length black poly pipe lengthways so you can cover them.

Does the 90mm storm drain just drain back into the sump all at 90mm? I cant figure that bit out.
