Well after a stinking hot night last night and a temp of 37.9 today, we have ended up with some heat struck fish.
The Ammonia is up to .5
Nitrates up to 40
Nitrites up to .25
PH down to 6, maybe a little under

They are not dead, just well and truly off the feed, slow swimming, and the water is looking a little murky etc.

We have decided to start harvesting them off. We were down to 68 so I have slaughter 7 tonight.

Will make sure that there is around 15 in the tank for the open day on the 14th, got to be able to see some fish swimming around.

If in doubt, take them out. They freeze well.

Yep, my fish were suffering from the heat today.
In fact, half a dozen ended up smoking hot

lol

I keep a couple of icecream containers of water in the freezer so on a stinker I can whack 'em in. Doesn't keep it cool, but kind of stops it from peaking at those high temps. Instead of being 26 degrees it's 24, and that's a hell of a difference to an O2 starved fish.

Well in preparation for next weeks trout festivities we started to slaughter off some of the 60 odd trout. Harvested 7 last weekend to practice the smoking thingy, and another 7 today. We have discovered that some of our fish have gone missing. Maybe they are just really really smart, but we cant seem to find them.
We recon we might have 10 left.
30 fish just dont disappear.

This weeks temperatures are 37 today, 38 tuesday, 39 wednesday, 39 thursday, 39 Friday, 34 Saturday - we have decided that it is definitely best to remove all fish.

Here is tonights fishing expedition. 9 trout, largest being just over 30cm. Sorry no weight measurements. thats the next thing on the shopping list, a proper set of scales.

Yeah, I took most of mine out for the same reason. I wasn't worried about the daytime temps, but the night time temps aren't going to drop below 20.

I did leave a few smaller ones in to see how they go..

Himzo.

Hey guess what..........We found the missing 30 trout. They werent missing, just really really smart (they learnt how to hide).

After the last few days of heat and nights that just didnt cool down, we came home today to 37 floating fish. The most amazing part was that the 2 smallest trout ever were still very much alive

Poor little souls, guilt can be a hard thing to live with

Sad that you are having an early summer, you would hope that you could grow trout until early-mid December in Adelaide most years and get them just a little bigger.
(It's been a very pleasant 30C here in Warrnambool - I'm not sorry that I'm not there)

Well we have just returned from spending Xmas in New Zealand. 3 weeks of lovely holidays.
It looks like you have all been busy, we have plenty of reading to catch up on. Just a couple of pictures to let you see what happens when no one is around to tidy up. Not sure if you can see how wild the tomatoes are, they also include a nest of sparrows.

The heat certainly got to the peas, and the lettuce etc has gone to seed.
