Well whatever floats ya boat hey mate.
I have cycled a hell of a lot of aquariums and ponds now using every thing from fish, to dead prawns, ammonia, fish food.... but my favourite would have to be using baby ducklings.
They don't get damaged gills or eyes, and can make any patch of water an ammonia filled mess in a day or 2. Plus as far as cycling animals go they are dam tasty by the end of the cycle. You say Pekin, I say Peking.
Oh ya and a good food for ducks is duckweed.... yea I know ya saw that one coming :)

For duckweed!
no way digger
just find some in a ditch or drain or something.
look at what it looks like, take a film container for a walk and go nab a bit.
It breeds so fast that in a few weeks you'll have a parent colony going in a bucket or something.
Nothing like a hunt.
Or go ask a few lfs.. they hate the stuff. prob score some for free.
I'd up the veggie content in their feed anyway hey. Occassional feeding of peas to goldys works well. I think the duckweed wafer is the ducks nux but ya peas do the job.

plant will grow with nothing but water in a system i can prove it have pictures and proof from Portland community college they run a hydro system feeding nothing but city water. and have been harvesting veggies. they have 4 20' gutter runs with 20 2"holes per gutter
i also have several kinds of vines and house plants that do fine in plain water. the next time you go to the store grab 1 leaf from an African violet and put it in a glass of city water and watch it grow.
the nutes from the fish will make things grow faster stronger and produce more
thanks
