Ok, so question number 1 is sort of answered.

Lets see the next one, maybe some more BYAP members join in with their thoughts:

2. Is it a good idea, to have lobster in the DWC bed?

My plan is to have loads of water to help managing system temp, and I`m calculating with 1m deep DWC bed, with haveing about 40cm expanded shale at the bottom, than 30cm deep living area for animals and 30cm for roots ( different kinds of lettuce only ). I don`t really want to sell lobster, just let them live down there, enjoy the life a bit, further clean my water and sometimes grab a few of them for dinner ( only if the population gets high enough ).
Depths in inches: Total: ~ 40" as ~15" media + 12" living area + 12" for roots.

I have crayfish in my DWC right now. Exactly the same strategy as you. :-)
I got around 20 adult ones from a breeding lake nearby.
I will harvest the oldest generation when they have reproduced and we'll have a nice family crayfish starter one evening. :-)

You are my man! :D

So what is your setup for the DWC bed? More details on dimensions and materials inside please.

A few months back you had a few paying patrons, at least that was a start. Now you have none, what happened???

I, would be gladly a Paying Patron, but reading your posts, there is no way I, would ever.

You put your children at risk. that's a NO-NO for me.

You put a system in backwards, that shows me trouble.

But, reading your past posts seems like you post more non AP articles.

Best of Luck:

OP

I did before I asked you, but I haven`t seen the proper details for your DWC. I saw some pics, but cannot tell too much from those.

Anyone else have crayfish in their AP?

Hi OP,

I thank you for commenting, but I don't understand your comments.

I never had any patrons, I just started the channel.
Where do I put my children at risk????
What non-AP articles have I posted?
Why would you say I put my system in backwards??

I'm really sorry but I just don't understand your comments.
I do want to know what you mean, can you please clarify for me?

I only have 3 videos as of now, as I'm trying to actually cover the entire journey from scratch to functioning system. All 3 videos are about my AP system.
In the feed, the latest video is at the top. Maybe that makes it look like I'm doing it backwards?

Cheers . Jens

You are right, there's not much in-depth information, mostly pictures.

The idea to get crayfish actually came from somewhere else. I saw a youtube video where someone had crayfish in their DWCs.

In the system in the current small greenhouse I have crayfish (a native species to Denmark) in the bottom wooden tank. On top I have tiny shrimp in the DWC, which I hope actually help clean the roots and process some of all the solids in the water.

In the new system I'm building I will put the crayfish in the filter tank. They will process the solids coming from the fish tanks.

When I eventually get to my commercial system I want to put the crayfish in the DWCs.

All right, so another question been answered: I will put crayfish into DWC and possibly to fish tank as well ( why not? :) )

So question 3:

I made up some calculations, and came up with this:

- 3500L FT with 70kg fish ( 875 gal and 140 lbs fish )
- 2 m2 media bed filter ( about 20 sqf ), 50cm deep ( 20 inch )
- 2 m2 CF bed ( about 20 sqf ), 50cm deep ( 20 inch )
- 12 m2 DWC ( about 130 sqf ), 1m deep ( 40 inch ) with 40cm media at the bottom

What do you all think about a system like this?

I think that looks interesting! The DWC with media on the bottom may be in danger of crating some anaerobic pockets as gunk collects on the bottom. I would leave out the media, put in some tubes etc for the crayfish to hide in.

Also, if you want to put crayfish in the FT, be adviced that many fish species find crayfish babies very delicious. :-)
There are ways around that problem too. One of the coming days I will make a short video from my new build and show you what I'm doing.

Ahh, you can see, the master before you said already its a total waste of time and money! :D :D

Good point, the media in DWC can be a problem, maybe it`s just better to do a 50cm ( 20 inch ) deep DWC to keep it simple, but there is still plenty of space for the crayfish so they don`t eat the roots and yet still enough water mass to control temperature.

That`s not a big problem, as crayfish in the FT will be "workers only", just to clean the tank more than the SLO can do. If the population grows, that`s an extra, but no problem if it doesn`t. Hopefully the DWC will be a good place for them to mass produce, so I can harvest from there from time to time.

Looking forward to it! You can post your video here, or just drop me a PM with the link.

Did you get an answer from "the master" about what his problem was with your ways of doing AP? :) :D

The Grump is in :headbang: This is a hobby OP, most of the people here do this for fun, to experiment or to grow their own food, not to get slammed by someone who thinks they know it all. Either be civil and explain why you'd do it differently or keep it to yourself.
