Hey ive been up close.... I really respect that fact that a larger body of water is probabily more resilient to temperature changes than smaller body of water. This is in addition to the larger quantity of fish you can hold too.

Jamie, hows the large number of half blue barrels going grow bed wise. Would you ever chnage you think to a different growbed system?

Roy, the blue drums seem to be going well. I've just replanted a whole heap. We lost the beans at the end of their season to spider mites, so I've replanted those and heap of other things. I've come to the conclusion that we need to have more camouflage planting. Plants of different shapes and sizes to trick the bugs. I'll see how this goes.

Also, coming in to summer it will be interesting to see what if anything grows and produces for us. I can't see any of the leafies making it through.

Water temp this afternoon 28oC

I don't know if we would change the beds for anything else. I know that if we had reason to empty any of them I would change and improve the supports for them. At the moment they are all pretty saggy.

On a brighter note, here is tonight's dinner

Three jades of:
24.0cm - 310g
24.5cm - 360g
25.0cm - 440g

Our water temp nudged 19C today, 28C where you are. Townsville is about 19 degrees south of the equator, Geelong is about 38 degrees south of the equator. At this time of year, every 2 degrees south of Townsville, water temps drop by 1C. Would this be a reasonable assumption to make?

I caught the bloody things!

After now having two meals of fish I have come to the following conclusions.
1/ catching them with a rod is far less taxing than sticking a landing net in the tank and waving it around. We did that this arvo and ...Gee my arms hurt! In the end I had to get J to stand on th opposite side of the tank to me and prod the hides with a rake to flush them out while I scooped madly from the other side. We ended up catching 6 altogether, 3 went back, 2 Jades and one silver.(on the up side any released fish don't have to deal with a hook hole in the snout tho)
2/ Filleting them is pretty easy and turned out a better product than the whole baked style, a lot less fatty (my personal opinion only, also means you can get rid of all the bones and skin Before the washing up

)

After I filleted them I washed them in a bit of cold water before skinning them, gee there was a lot of oil on that water!!!!!

But they tasted nice and everyone ate all of it, no rejections!!! lots of "This is good Daddy" so that is a good sign!

The silver that was unfortunate enough to get caught was about 18-20 cm but still trim, taut and terrific, nowhere near eating size, don't know if it was an accurate representation of it's species but if so it will still be a few months before we are eating silvers.

Trust me, waiting for the silver perch could be worth the wait if todays lunch is anything to go by. Beautiful white moist flesh, yummmeee!

So how long has it been since they were fingerlings?

both the silvers and jades arrived here on January 19th. The silvers were about 30-50mm and the jades 60-80mm.

Arnt pearch very slimy? I hate slimy fish... I think im going to go for Barra when I get my system... Besides.. I wonder how they will go up on the tableslands.... In winter I think id move to silver pearch...

Hmmm. You were filleting Jades that are about the same weight as my tilapia. But when Dad and I were cleaning the last batch of tilapia, we didn't think there was any way we could get a decent fillet off them. I really think that 500g would be the minimum weight of a tilapia that I could get a decent fillet. The Jades seem fatter than my tilapia. I guess the slight difference in body shape makes the fillets come out easier.

Axl, you're using barbless hooks I assume? Makes for smaller holes in the ones you chuck back...
