It's been cooling down over the last couple of weeks. The air temps have been getting down to 9oC and the water temp in the monster tank is about 18oC.

We've had a few issues with feed the last couple of months, with getting the wrong size pellets and the fish taking a long time to get through a bag of 8mm barra pellets. We finally finished that bag and got some 6mm, when it seems like these ones are sinkers  We've all been used to the 6mm pellets floating on the surface and seeing the fish strike at them :) These sinkers vanish straight away and you can't tell if they are being eaten or not. I think I've been underfeeding for a few days just in case.

But then it got cooler, so I thought after last night's dinner for the fish that they could possibly go without a meal to make sure that there was no excess food in the tank. I even had a sleep in this morning, until 7:30am!

We have a bread crate in the tank for the eastern bloc watercress. Until this morning there was a growing patch of watercress, about the size of a 4L icecream container. Until this morning.

Now there is a tiny stump of watercress. Teeny tiny.

That'll learn me for not feeding the fish in the morning ;)

Hmmmm...I've stuck with 4mm pellets being a good size for the littlies as well...know what you mean about the floating pellets as it is a easy to work out the feed quantities :D

If your stuck with sinking pellets ,, make a submerged tray ,, ahh a tray that sits say 6-12 inches under water , lay pellets there will help you get an idea if you are over feeding or not.

OR ,, you could attach little fishing floats to each sinking pellet:)  :sign5:

G'day Jaymie, quick question, with your fish mixed with different sizes, do you find your bigger jades and silvers eat the smaller ones/ new arrivals? I know my cod will and I am tossing up the idea of having three tanks, one with this years cod , one for next years cod, and one for jades and/or silvers which has a new batch of fingerlings dumped in every 6 or 12 months.
thanks
cod fish

no, they don't eat each other. There are even rainbowfish in there that are surviving, and they only get to about 7cm long.

That was one reason why we went for the perch, so you can have differing ages in together.

I'm an omnivore but havn't eaten my children.
SP / JP may well LOVE to eat a few baby crustaceans ,, worms , and insects but not necesarilly want to attack other fish.

minus one baby jade  I found it this morning on top of the bread crate that is floating in the tank. The azolla and duckweed get caught up in the crate and the fish are going berko for it at the moment. Poor little bugger got stuck :(
