No. Townsville is in the Dry Tropics. If you go 100km up the coast from town, you get to the Wet Tropics and it has been wet up there for lots of the year (poor buggers in those places trying to repair after Larry).
Townsville is in a rain shadow, winter for us is 6 months of blue skies and drier and drier ground. Summer is wet, there's not much in between.

Rain Shadow...

Such a wierd thing... lived in the rain shadow from the mountain in NZ as a kid... about 50" per year

on the opposite side, averaged 200" (inches) per year...

I'm tellin ya ... the story of Noahs Ark was written in NZ

ah, growing up in Cairns, each day wiping the green mould off my school shoes, riding my bike home in the rain, the waterfall on the mountain always visible (well maybe not through the mist and clouds )

We didn't get any rain last night

AM, now that you live in Cairns have you noticed the phenomenon of intercity rivalry between Townsville and Cairns? Because I grew up there, we were brainwashed to hate Townsville. Alex grew up in Townsville, he hates Cairns (wouldn't live there if you paid him). It seems to be easing a bit, but its still there :)

did notice it - thought it was/is a bit on the odd side! I mean, come on, Cairns is WAY better (he says never having visited Townsville ;) )
It has been relatively dry here too (well, compared to 5 or 6 years ago anyways - it only rained for 2 hours this morning

Have you seen the new weather radar maps BOM is trialing Jaymie, now have options to include/exclude roads/railways/topography etc by use of tick boxes, being use at Brisbane and Sth Aus.

Black is Rail and red is roads as per ticks

no cloud here right now :( This time of year it usually comes in late afternoon.

That new radar looks fun, I hope they bring it up here soon

It's bizzare to think while we are in the middle of the biggest drought on record down here, you guys are having the opposite, purely by the location you are in. It's easy to forget you don't have the same water woes as we do.

I recieved a similar response from a hydro store employee saying that in an ebb and flow system it would be advised to have very few cycles per day.
However, I have been conversing with Dr. Nick Savidov of CDC, in Alberta,
a researcher in aquaponics, and they are beginning to use coir as a low maintenance, and easily replacable medium.
If I can get more info regarding coir I will pass it on.

I will be calling the hydro store tomorrow to find out if there are any fertilizers in the small sample brick I bought.

My thoughts are using it for micro greens suspended in trays in my flood reservoir.i want easily transportable trays of geens that can be harvested as needed, while having a store of water to subsist on during storage.
Coir seems ideal for this.
I'm still fond of gravel beds so far. That may change with more gravel washing in the future!
