I did manage to see the fish using a bit of plastic to push the duckweed from one end of the tank to the other. However, the fish is pretty good at following the leading edge and staying hidden.

Then we did the swap around of fish in the big system and added a few more tilapia into the duckweed tank to see if we get any breeding going on. I'm hoping that the temps in the duckweed system will make that possible and also hoping that the fish do ok even without the oodles of aeration the big system gives.

Duckweed system seems to be going along nicely. I can harvest a couple net fulls a day. It is amazing at how little dried duckweed you get once it dries out.

Salivina & duckweed.

salvinia is a really really bad weed. really really.
duckweed is a good source of protein and has one of the highest growth rates of all flowering plants.

But its the really really bad bit that makes it good. I think they should be harvesting the stuff for cattle feed. Get rid of the nutrients in the water ways from the sewage they dump in there.

Duckweed I got for free locally.

The other stuff is probably considered a noxious weed here and I wouldn't want to be caught with it. (There are several types of plants that can get you a criminal record here in Florida.)

Duckweed seems to be dieing off on me :? I don't know if there is something missing from my water? Just not enough ammonia? Or something in the water killing it? Too much or too little sun?

But the 4 tilapia in that tank seem to be doing fine, perhaps they are simply eating too much? But I doubt that.

I had the same problem. So I gave up. Seems Im no good at growing weeds that seem to be an invasive species for everyone else. Hmmm perhaps I people could just give me their ponds and lakes then when I took care of them it would all die off :P

I was going to suggest that it doesn't like the south, but I recall seeing an article/picture of it growing in Louisiana.

Duckweed seems to like it here, but it only seems to like being where it isn't wanted I guess. I guess I built a too nice pond for it. Perhaps if I do something a little more hap hazard it will grow better.

Guess the old saying is true: If you're going treat a person(duckweed) as bad, then they are going to act that way.

Maybe more shade. I've had it die off in one container and thrive in another. Maybe a little seasol for trace. Is the plant browning or just disapearing.

just disappearing. It is in a tank with 4 tilapia so they could be eating a fair bit of it but normally it would be able to keep up with their grazing plus a fair bit of harvest and still cover the water. It has been getting maxicrop and some hummonia (though with the 4 fish in the tank I haven't wanted to add too much.)

Perhaps this weekend I'll do some extra nutrient testing all around to see how the Nitrate reading is in that system compared to what it was a few weeks ago.
