Started this system cycling 10 weeks ago with some goldfish and when cycled I got 20 trout fingerlings to replace the goldfish.
Had a wee disaster on the first day of the trout. Went to Ballarat to get the trout, bought them home, into the tank and off to the footy. Came home to find one of the returns from one of my growbeds had fallen off and the tank was down to a few inches of water and 20 stressed trout. Threw the hose from the rainwater tank in and quickly refilled.
Lost one fish two days later and another two days after that. They have been in the tank for 4.5weeks now and no more deaths phew.

Anyhoo, fish are growing, plants are growing, but I think the pump is damaged from running dry for hours

Tank is 500L and 3 growbeds totalling 400L and a just put in strawberry tube that I just planted out yesterday but the pic is from Sunday.
System is in one half of my greenhouse

Hi Mantis,

That black, cylindrical thing you have before the fish tank is that a filter of some kind?

Cheers.

Yes, Bigdaddy its a 30L pressure canister filter. Bottom half is filled with bio balls and top half has 3 foam pads about 10cm thick in course, medium and fine grades. It should help with the filtration and also remove solids for the NFT tube.
A big over kill for one little tube but I had it there so...................
:)

But they are growing faster than I thought they would :)

What species of trout do you have?

I had a small aquaculture system for Brook Trout some years ago, grew out some brood stock, stripped and hatched eggs and raised a number of fingerlings. I enjoy working with Trout.

I am guessing that if the beds all fill at the same time it would take 160L out of the tank at %40 of 400L of growbed.
If you come into Horsham on your way to adelaide you would drive right past our place on the way in.
I will be getting some silvers and catfish later in the year and hopefully have my new system setup, if I can get the tanks and growbeds here.

Hi Mantis

just like you see in all the govt and private hatcheries, mixed the eggs and milt after stripping in a big pastic pan that never had soap in it, used clean cool water from the system, had a couple air stones in it, let them set and absorn water and swell up, then put them in a couple stair stepped trays with water flowing through them and on out to the lower trays, a fairly straight forward holding system,

when the eggs were eyed began watching them real close, spooned a few out to hatch in a lower tray but when they began hatching it was not necessary, after the yolk sacs were absorbed I began adding feed, both very fine powdered fry feed plus new hatched artemia. In a week all were in a tank and eating well. Keep a good water flow all the time. NO ammonia ever.

There is a ton of information available on the net on spawning and rearing salmonids, its done all very similar, google aqanic for starters, rainbows and brookies are pretty standardized, I have gotten interested in Cutthroats so if I do anymore trout it will probably be them although rainbows and brookies are my first loves.
