Post subject:  How do I have Bluegill babies --immaculate conception?

Hi everyone, I am new to this forum, but have been operating my IBC tote aquaponic system for 6 years now. A couple a weeks ago I noticed a bunch of baby fish swimming in my 2 sub-tanks that haven't had ANY fish in them since the Fall.

You see this past Fall I decided to move all my fish (Catfish, Bluegill and Goldfish) to the main tank (green tank in pic) for the winter in case everything froze over. After the move I had some Bluegill die. In fact, I don't know that I even have 2 Bluegill to rub together to make babies.

What happened?

1) Did my Bluegill mate last year in the sub-tanks and the eggs survived the freezing winter to hatch now?
2) Did my Bluegill mate in the big tank, the eggs sucked up, went through the pipes, through the gravel grow beds and then hatched in the sub-tanks?
3) Miracle - immaculate conception?

And btw, a few Goldfish with dark spots hatched also. All my Goldfish are orange and white, can Bluegill, Catfish and Goldfish cross-speciate?

Welcome to the forum.

Are you sure they’re bluegill? My guess is explanation number 2 but that they’re goldfish.

I think it’s normal for goldfish to have babies of varying colors.

usually get a few natural black/bronze goldfish ('unlcolored' - usually called feeder goldfish) .
Some GF don't develop colors for a few months.

GF breed easily if unstressed but usually eggs/babies get eaten.
In your case they were inevitably flushed through to safer waters... hence seeing a few.

Looks like Bluegill to me. I Freecycled a bunch of my Goldfish and can now see I have 3 adult Bluegill left in the big tank.

Shape and color don't look right to me. There's a lot of normal color variation with bluegill but the fin tips aren't even a bit dark and the shape of the dorsal fin seems wrong :dontknow: . This looks more like a goldfish to me as well. Grow it up a while and see what you get, always fun to find out and have your curiosity satisfied :thumbright: .
