As mentioned in a Mussel Thread, I was looking for a fish to host Mussels and also not eat marron juveniles, read up on Pygmy Perch and they sounded ideal, eat algae and mozzies, they are apparently very good on sneaking up on mozzies that land on water, and also larvae as well, got a hundred or so yesterday after 4 hours of driving, had a few casualties (9), but all in pond now, they are getting stuck into the algae on my mesh, so that bit is true, the pics below are about as big as they grow, as all are roughly same size, but This Link suggests they may grow slightly bigger, see what happens in my less crowded tank, freshwater anglers use them for bait to catch Redfin in Dams (I am told), I think they will make a good alternative to Goldfish, I wanted to do something a little different and every one has Goldfish, I have read that there is a similar Eastern Pygmy Perch that appears to be protected though and also a Southern PP that isn't protected but is only found in southern Vic as far as I can work out

personally i love them but i know others who don't. i've been told that they don't keep mosquito's under control. i haven't found this to be the case but what do i know?

as for breeding i don't believe anyone has bred them in tanks yet. i believe they do breed in dams as i know a place in gingin where they are abundant.

i find them a great fish to grow as they have interesting personalities. they certainly seem a lot more intelligent then goldies. probably all the inbreeding with goldies. i'd prefer them to goldies any day.

where did you score 100 of them Nocky? i've been looking for a lot that size for ages. hard to find them and i believe its illegal to wild capture.

Bio I can't see where it says it is illegal to catch them, have read fish wa site, but mine were got from a friend of a friends dam 200 k's from Narrogin, we actually got 200 some for friend but had several casualties once in tank, but seem to have settled now, around 70 left each, they had a 200km rough ride in an esky, but am breeding for sales about December

Man I hate no edit button, also Bio they are excellent for Mozzies, the mistaken Mosquito Gambusia (excuse my latin) or Mosquito Fish was intriduced to eat Mozzies, but finds fish eggs more to the taste, and is actually taking over WPP spots by eating there eggs

i don't know where I picked up on it but seem to remember you can't catch them from rivers as they are endangered or something to that effect. i cant remember where i read it though.

as for selling them you will need a license for that. i believe there is currently only one person in WA with a license to sell them but i've seen them in aquarium shops and the like. you should be fine but its something to think about. you may want to contact fisheries before you sell any. on the other hand you may not as chances are you wont get a license. ignorance is sometimes the best in this murk of legislation. just don't do it commercially.
