Looking at ways to keep low cost feeding year round, Duckweed seems great but seems to have it's fair share of downsides too, namely the large amount of greenhouse space. Could I utilize swirl filter drainage to grow a crop in ground that tilapia or catfish could efficiently utilize? Soy, corn, millet something along those lines? Ideally something where they could eat the whole plant. Ideas?

i know i'm real late, but for future readers, the ever trusty wikipedia says flax seed will add omega 3s, and tilapia eat it, also some have had luck feeding veggies to fish if they clip the leaves underwater.

Mine will eat just about any green. I just use a spring loaded clip and put it on the side of the FT's. They seem to like softer greens. Lettuce gets eaten faster then kale.

For your system to produce at its best you need top quality feed there is no way around it,what you put in is what comes out,the better the quality you put in the better growth you get.
Its all well and good supplementing with stuff you can grow, forage etc but be prepared for the short fall in your growbeds.
If your using solids filtration cut back on your feeding ratio, then the solids you retrieve mineralise the shit out of it,for want of a better phrase then decant this water back into your system, make sure your getting every ounce of nutrients out of what you have put in.
