Disclaimer: This is only a half-serious question.

My AP system is quickly turning into more of a science/engineering project than a "grow your own food" project...

I searched around on google and could not even find any scientific research results about the effects of psilocybin on fish. I've checked up on local laws and it's legal for me to buy spores for the mushrooms that produce psilocybin compounds, as long as I don't grow them with the intent to distribute or consume them.

(For those not familiar, psilocybin is the psychoactive compound found in over 200 species of mushrooms that causes hallucinations)

Here's some thoughts on what might happen to the fish when they consume psilocybin:

1. They die. This would be bad.
2. No effect.
3. Significant behavior change, for example lack of fear of predation.
4. Panic or other self-destructive behavior like ramming the walls of the tank or jumping out of the water.

It might be worth investigating...

But why would you want to try.. just seems pointless.. :dontknow:
One can only think the question is there because the magic musshies are being grown AND there is a concern as to what may happen..

It's science. The reason is understanding. Without trying, we will never know what would happen.

From younger days, my guess would be...some stomach discomfort, followed by minor hallucinations, loss of sense of time, some feelings of hysteria, and then their stomachs will hurt from laughing for so long. :flower:

If they ate them, I don't think it'd do much. Fish have a different chemistry to us. If you try to give something like extra hot chilli to a fish, it won't have any affect, because it'd not evolved to be taken by the fish.

You might be able to feed it to the fish, and then eating the fish have some affects of the mushrooms, but it seems way easier to just eat the mushrooms straight.

There is a high likelyhood that fish do not have the appropriate receptors for the psi to bind to.
however, one does not know.

please get the fishes permission before you start forcing drugs down thier troat.

and naturally, the speculation could move towards to serious end, when you consider that metabolically, fish would not ever (normally) get to eat them, and thus there could be a significant impact..
Just think how ZINC is claimed to have such a serious effect, and yet you would think that it was more common within their environment..

but it still boiles down to WHY..Would..You..?

you could then try Crack-Cocaine and Hash and Tomato Paste.. and.. and how is it science??

is not as though there could be a massive effect that reveals how cancer can be cured in humans.. :-(

Back in the 60's my brother gave his gold fish LSD periodically. Aside from all the changes we may have imagined occurring, the fish lived a long life.

This conclusively proves that LSD improves the lives of goldfish. :laughing3:

I was doing some "Cooking" where alcohol was being boiled off.. and i could smell it but my Rainbow Lorrie (native parrot) was S.M.A.S.H.E.D. Paralytic..

I took him out to the fresh air and it was hours B4 he could even stand..
Then for a time, he screamed at us when we came near.. (Hang-Over)
After a day, he was OK again..

So you never know how different substances may affect different species, and so again I wonder how such represents Science..

Many consider pumping crap into monkes as science, and many think it is species abuse - and it is !!

Sounds like a meth lab to me. :D

The reason they use primates for research is they are the closest to humans. I don't agree with using animals for cosmetics and non health related research either. But if you can save one child's life by doing research using monkeys, I'm 100% on board.

I remember a friend of mine back in the day would blow gunja smoke into the aerator for his goldfish aquarium. They seemed pretty chilled out.

Id like to see them use children to save monkeys.... there are less monkeys than children.
