Hi folks i am new here and was wondering what are the pros and cons of having an automated fish feeding system? In terms of conversion rate and satiation.
Thanks

I have never used a feeder and not recommended them in the past. Better off feeding manually and checking your fish at the same time.

Con: it malfunctions and either drops everything in the tank causing a spike and killing your fish or doesn't drop anything into the tank and killing your fish.

Cons: can't check on fish. If fish aren't eating one day for whatever reason you then over feed. If the feeder does not spread feed across the whole tank but trickles the feed in one spot, that encourages the dominant fish to stake that area out. Then the dominant fish grow faster and bigger than the other fish and then you have a bullying and pecking order problem.

If you aren't at home you can't check on your fish, or how hungry they are, so an on-demand feeder makes the most sense. The fish only take what they want, meaning no excess feed left, as might be the case with an auto-feeder that dumps pellets into the tank on a timer.
I'm planning to make myself a couple from stainless steel in the near future.

The pro is that it can feed your fish for you without you having to be there

Con - It's not only the excess feed that can cause nutrient and disease problems, the lack of inspection of the tank, fittings, pumps, aerators and fish themselves. Any one of these failing to operate correctly can snowball into a nightmare if not resolved promptly.
Get a neighbour to check on things and feed the FISH.
