Definitely has carrot-ish leaves, but I'm not sure whether it's a carrot or something related. Is it the only one like this, Brian? Did you plant more of the seeds? What do the seeds look like? I'm wondering if it was a one-off (wrong seed fell into the basil seeds) or a whole mislabeled packet now.

Just checking goggle now. Does look like carrot.

My gardening skills are very much beginner level :-)

Planted 4 or 5, I think three survived. They have been in since January some time.

Photos of seeds to come

Dill has a pointed leaf...I thought possible Cilantro but agree with carrot. Cilantro seeds are round balls and the plant will give of a strong smell when rubbed. Any orange under the hydroton?

Dill is... uh... "frillier" is the best description I can come up with. Those certainly look like basil seeds, not carrot seeds, so if the other plants were as expected it might be just a one off. You say three or so survived, do the others look the same or are they proper basil?

Looking at google it looks like basil seed. And all three look the same plant.

Will have to pull them up and have a look what is under the surface.

Doing my head in. Beginning to question if that was where I put basil in? Now I see why people use planting maps!

But then what is growing? I have no carrot or dill seed. Something dropped in by birds or blown in? Or maybe came with the worms I put in?

Well, either Mr Fothergill has betrayed you entirely, or... I dunno! In your place I'd probably sprout some more of the seed just to see what came up; if it's more of the weirdo not-basil plants, contact the company. If basil comes up, you really have a mystery there!

Yes, but not all cultivars are with so frilly or feathery and pointy leaves. For example, the Hercules cultivar is described as:

Gardening Know How: Dill Plant Types: What Are Some Different Varieties Of Dill
Quote:
Hercules is another variety that takes a long time to flower, though its leaves are coarser than those of other types, which means it’s best to harvest when the plant is young and the leaves are the most tender.

Here is a picture (unfortunately the webpage to find out more details is password protected) of a Dill with less frilly leaves, it is titled "Baby dill plants growing in the main vegetable garden":

Image

It is probably not too early to do the taste, squish, rub and smell test, is it? That should provide some clues...

Presumably it would have to be one of the things Mr. Fothergill offers in Australia, right?
