I ask because I really want to grow them but from reading the forum everyone seems to be salting to 4-7ppm at some point which as I understand it will kill my strawberries... Am I correct in my assumption?

Not everyone.. Generally we only have salt in a couple of our systems.. Barra seem to like salt, or suffer without it, at least for us, but most of our others have nothing in them.

The only other time people may salt to that level... is to combat fin rot or bacterial problems...

But that's usually as a reaction to problems that relate more to general water quality, stocking and filtration issues...

Generally, other than to perhaps combat nitrite issues in a new system, or one just stocked.... you shouldn't really have to salt a system at all... or certainly not regularly...

I grow strawberries in my system and they do far better than the ones in my soil garden. No salt at all. I had added trace amount to my system once and they didn't like it one bit!
