Ok, well yesterday I found a new egg squashed completely. It was flat. WTF is going on????
Anyhow I think I'll start gathering them again shortly for the next incubation.
Does anybody feed their quail anything to assist with calcium uptake? Maybe this is why the eggs are being destroyed?

I feed mine layer crumbles or game bird feed. Switched to the Layer crumbles as my chicken hens are 21 weeks old and should start laying soon. May want to offer them some crushed oyster shell.

OK really concerned now. 4 days, 1 egg per day, every egg destroyed.
I have noticed a mouse living under the cage, I'd thought he was eating the grain.
however as we all know from such educational television shows such as 'Chicken Run', rats will do anything for chicken eggs. Could the same be said of mice for quail eggs?
Description of the mose is: Dark brown / Black and blurry. Damn he is fast.

I bet you found your culprit. If he tasted one he'll continue coming back as it is a continious food source.
Just a possible observation is I quit feeding the quail scratch a few weeks back and while the feather pecking in the brown quail drasticly decreased not completely stopped. The whites who never were completely on scratch never feather pecked.
Is this coincidence or maybe they just need the higher protein and just take it off the back of their buddies????

Chicken Scratch is just a cheap mix of corn milled to small pieces and a varitity of small grains.

To try to prevent feather picking in my quail I was told one of the reasons they do it is they are craving the protein they would normally get from insects. I also read where people would offer catfood as a supplement to their feed and it would reduce or end feather pecking. So.... I went in the cupboard and got a can of spam put with the white quail and potted meat to the brown quail. They pecked at it initially out of curiosity but we'll see. I kind of think it's more behavior driven but, just an experiment. I may get some of that blue stuff to put on the naked backed quails.

Naked back quail are starting to get pin feathers on their backs again, definitely not ready to declare it a success yet. But results look positive. I may just add a small piece of hot dog weekly may be all the animal protein they crave.

Most Interesting BRB.
I have ionly 1 male quail left, and non of the late girl's eggs were fertile :-(
I will be following suit and buying some 50 eggs of a local breeder (there are 2 in my area for gene pool) and incubating them - once I have built the cage.

9 out of 50 is still good for 10 day old eggs that were free as far as I care though , they'll still taste good for xmas dinner

Still havent set any of my own eggs , Im still eating the first lot of eggs from the layers and working out which ones I want to breed , but should start in a week or two

Crazy quail started laying eggs in this cold weather 8-10c above freezing. Not sure what triggered it??? Possibly the little meat sausages (animal protein) which did stop the feather picking! Any of you guys in the southern hemisphere started hatching your own eggs yet. I picked a dozen and a half today maybe a few days worth. Probably got cold enough to kill the viability of the eggs but may collect a few more days worth and try incubating them.

Boris, how is your partridge incubation going?
considering hatching chickens and quail togather and stagger them where the hatch during the same day/days and brood togather. Maybe the chickens won't attack the quail if they brood and grow togather.

I'd take it out. My reasoning is it's just like your house, takes a while to get it to the proper temp cause it has to warm/cool all the furniture, so if you get it the temps will go right back within a couple minutes. I lost almost my whole last hatch due to the light bulb going out in my brooder box during a cold snap. I will eventually build a better brooder. I've always taken them out as it also helps keep the incubator sanitary.

+1

I have an incubator, but no brooder, none of my quail eggs were fertile... They're sold locally to me on trading post though so I'll buy the next batch and grow them from scratch.
ATM I'm working on my rapidly increasing numbers of rabbits. - As well as looking after my boy. Check out the Rabbit thread in days to come to see the Top notch new hutch I'm building. It will double for quail
