Lost the last 7 brown quail between yesterday and today. I'm guessing it was possibly a respitory ailment brought by mosquitos or wild birds picking up spilt scratch. Chickens have their appatites back but egg production is still down and have visibly lost some weight. I wish I could share the causes. But didn't effect the white quail at all... :dontknow: The chicken I lost was the white rock broody hen who's resistance may have been down from fasting for the sake of setting eggs. One of the Wellsummer hens took her place at being broody while another Wellsummer hen took to egg eating  I'm want to see them all healthy before I harvest the Wellsummers and keep the white rocks.

Thanks DV, I was supprised at how little interest there were by the state federal and local governments, heaven help us if bird flu were to really come here. It won't be until it gets sensationalized by the media before they recognize it at all.

Ya - that supprised me also especially seeing it is still early in the mosquito season and they could have got a heads up as to what to expect and what get a head start on spraying.

Speaking of spraying for mosquitos - when the trucks come by my place, I get hit on three sides. They come will come withing two to three hundred feet on three sides of the property. Any concerns with AP and mosquito spray?

That stuff used to be diesel based, I don't think it is anymore. They pass within 20' of my back fence but I have'nt seen one in over a year. Probably pass while I'm at work. They used to spray in mornings and evenings while mosquitos were active. I guess they don't want to pay shift differential. :dontknow: It didn't seem to hurt my fish. So far only outdoor fish killer for me was Mother Nature... Hurricane in 08 and freezing weather in winter of 09/10.

here you go :

kill 5 quails, try not to enjoy it so much

leave for a day in the fridge

into the blender : buttload of rocket, freshly toasted pumpkin seeds, two tomatoes, one whole garlic, parsley, and some bread crumbs

stuff the quail, wrap in bacon, cook for as long as it takes and cross your fingers that it tastes ok

the recipe for the woodfired venison ribs is :

one full tank of petrol, drive 3 hours and drink too much wine, pick up venison ribs in the morning and drive 3 hours home . cook until you cant wait anymoreand the bucket you've been drooling and salivating into is full

poor me, the day in between these two meals I had to put up with slow-roasted lamb shanks ...

wether it was the bacon , the stuffing or the covering them with alfoil most of the time, but these quail tasted exactly like duck - the last lot ( pan fried ) tasted alot more quail-y

Is skinning easier than plucking? Or is it a quality decision?

Yummm, Boris.
Sorry to hear you had to make do with lamb shank but you have to have an 'off night' some time.
