thanks guys

I never pluck quail ,its SO easy to skin them - one small slit below the breast and ( legs cut at knees already and wings & head off ) the skin comes off with all the feathers like a glove

I used to cut the legs off, cut the breast meat out and then turf the rest, but this time I cut from above the butt next to the oil glands, alongside the backbone either side to the neck , turn em upside down and the guts all scoop out cleanly with the backbone

I was worried about the trout in the heat, should have checked the quail aswell, they dont seem to like it either

I've cut quick rough holes in the sides of al the quail cages and stuck small computer fans blowing into each pen, wired up to old mobile phone chargers, thats only temporary - Ive come up woth a better idea thats gona take some tinkering and planning

I've been meaning to make a big waterer for each pen - Im thinking I could somehow make a waterer that holds a heap of water ( for quail ) say 2 - 3L, fills a bottom drinker trough , on one side ( the wall of the pen ) theres wire mesh above the trough so the quail can't get in, but can stick their heads in to drink, on the other side of the trough ( say its the size of the small end of a tissue box ) is the computer fan, other two walls enclosed

so pretty much a normal drinker but with a much bigger water tray at the bottom, enclosed to funnel the air in one directin that blows from the fan across the top of their drinking water

I suppose I'll lose a fair bit to evaporation, but the drinkers Ive got at the moment need filling every 2 days or so anyway

got no drawing program on this computer or I'd draw up a picture to explain what I'm thinking better

I was out shooting rabbits yesterday, and shot my first quail!
Startled me, and I didn't believe it was quail for a second. Luckily I had my shotgun!
Anyhow... tasty. I was thrilled so thought I'd share ;-) First quail I've ever seen in the wild, and I had my shotgun handy...

If shot from a distance only one or two pellets would get it anyway (depending on the gun)

We used to go quail shooting when I was younger and we used 10 shot which didnt damage them much unless you got one too close.

I've seen quail at the golf course/restaurant just down the road from us, I think there might be a little trouble if I went down there with a shotgun....

The good thing about science is that you don't have to believe in it for it to be right.

Well my quail adventure is over for now, ordered more food the week before xmas, ran out and they were starving ( so was I ... ) so I started cutting heads off my remaining 11.

I was about to cut the last one and got a call - the quail food has arrived in the store ...

eh, incubators broken , sick of quail egg in every third meal and REALLY sick of one male deciding to crow non-stop every morning starting at 5 ( even when I kill the one thats doing it, another decides its a good idea a few days later )

dont have time this year to stuff around watering all the seperate cages and cleaning them every few weeks, but theyre gonna taste damn good in the pizza oven in a couple days - stuffed with minced rocked , lemon and toatsed pumpkin seeds, and wrapped in bacon

We kept cortunix quail for a couple years here. Had plenty of quail and plenty of quail eggs. We pickled them and all sorts of stuff.

We kept them caged in our barn and under each pin we had made trays to catch their waste for easy cleaning. In the trays, there was always lots of some sort of large fly larva growing. The larva was up to 1.5in sometimes so we fed them to chickens we were also keeping back then.

Thinking on it now, that larva probably would have been a nice high-protein fish feed. Another plus for sustainability for those with AP systems.
