Bantum roosters do crow but not as load as a larger varity.
After breeding rabits for five years I found them to inbred to breed reliabley. So harvested the breeders and only kept the buck. Bought all new does and will start over in the fall when cooler. By the by a buck will go sterile in a period of over 95 deg. F. and take months to recover. Also the does will not kendle well in the heat.

I had some Rock Cornish Bantums and they crowed not nearly as loud but made up for in in frequency and extreme early morning crowing. It was an experiment in small eggs and live incubators. I'm gonna start a bunny thread as they are a good addition for sustainability.

One of the stupid quail decided it would be fun to crow constantly starting at 6am ( after doing it intermittantly through the night ... )

I decided in return to see how well he does it with his head off . Turns out quail cant crow without a head .

Just cleaned and gutted it , not huge but Im happy enough with the amount og meat on it after only 6 weeks

Guts are disgusting .
Anyone squemish about gutting fish should do a quail , then you'll have no trouble doing fish again

I cant drink my coffee now cause I keep imagining fresh quail guts floating in it ....

 Time to move the quail outdoors. After about 5 days after hatching I move mine out rubermaid tub with droplite 5 days later its cage time. You just need a little hutch with a droplite in it for winter. I just about finished mine. I may put the little wafer thermostat in it to keep it from overheating the little hutch. It isn't fancy but I think it will get them thru the winter. I moved the older quail to the new cages with the tiny little cup auto waterer. The still haven't learned to peck the yellow stem to refill the cup. Quail are definitely dumber than chickens.

the real pens are getting built later this week now that Ive found a good source of exterior ply , then once theyre done the remaining 14 ( 3 weeks old ) will go out there too

one dressed quail now in the fridge marinating with garlic chives , pepper and lime juice , tasting time in one hour ...

Built my hutch out of 1/4" wafer board. Not good stuff but the local homecenter only had interior ply in 1/4". I framed it with treated 2x2s to try to save on weight. I still have to wire the lights, thermostat, and timer. I will probably prime/seal it also other wise it won't last but a couple years.

I attached the hutch to the quail cage and the chicks can roam the cage and go back into the hutch to warm. The do spend the nights in the hutch. I have .25"/.635 mm wire mesh in the hutch floor. This is mainly going to be for the chicks until they are about 4-5 weeks old. then I will move them to small group cages. My 2nd batch is in there now. My first hatchling hens are being beatup pretty good by the eager males. They peck their backsides bald and bloody. I had to do some seperating until the hens are ready. I may even trim some beaks something I was trying to avoid. Sexing these things are more difficult than I thought :blackeye:

My third group of eggs started hatching this evening, the brown jumbos and the large A&M Whites. No eggs from the first group yet but now that they are crowing I believe they are mostly males so it's harvest time.

I believe it's quite a wide range. I have kept them from 25f/-4c to 105F/40c. but in the winter they had a hutch with a lightbulb that broke the cold but they were able to roam out into their cage as they pleased. They definitely prefered it warm though. Quail are easy to keep in cages and the chickens gladly pick up their food spillage. The males just started the morning crowing. I may get some colored leg bands as the little males do a little crowing in their 2/3 weeks and I need to Id them then so the hens won't get harrased too much when they reach adulthood.
You should get you some. A little more fun in sustainability!

I got 52 hatchlings out of 100 so far on the first day of hatching, which is normally all I get in the two days they hatch out. I paid closer attention to humidity this go round. I also wired up the wafer thermostat switch in the quail hutch so as soon as the temps level off right they are moving outside! I didn't get to the harvest today but tomorrow hasn't been touched

Best Hatch yet, ended up with 58 quail hatching. Lost the first one to egg turner. Got pinned undernieth. One weak one barely got out of it's shell. Have another weak one (late hatcher) prolly won't make it to tomorrow, and while transfering chicks to the hutch one Kamakazi'ed down to the chooks who like to ripped him in half. I recovered it but Prolly won't make it either. The rest are all healthy and in the Temperature controled hutch! No smelly house this time!

8 week old quail and got the first eggs. :D It's only two but hopfully the other hens will join in soon. It takes about 2 dozen eggs to make a pint of quail eggs.
