4 times per day or once every 6 hours?

A subtle difference, but I just don't know.

Hi guys. I can't figure how to get an eBay link from my iPhone, so would ask for patience here.

Could you check out these two items and let me know what you think?

eBay Item number: 190335762855
eBay Item number: 190336194016

whilst possible it's not easy to get the little giant brand here. And shipping is almost prohibitive. So what do you thing of the two items listed above?

Thanks brb. So you reckon the fan is worth the $50 extra?

Hay Kuda, I would recommend the bellsouth R-COM Digital 3, does 7 quail eggs and you just put the eggs in, put water in the water well and press a button to turn it on and check it every other day till you get close to hatching. i have used them and had good results.

don't know if Bellsouth still have them in stock.

cheers.

There is one such on eBay. Auto turning. Does 7 eggs. But costs $200 + shipping.

KP do what I did - get an old bar fridge , rip the guts out of the back of it , buy a $30 brass wafer thermostat and slap 2 light bulb fittings in the back

My bar fridge incubator fits 200+ eggs at a time , turned through a hole in the back with a small dowel wired on to a rack running opposite to the normal beer fridge shelf / rack thing

I'll take photos tomorrow ( there might even be some in my thread )

heres my answers to the questions ( bear in mind I have no real idea what Im doing but just ate quail for dinner ( marinated in soy sauce and lemon , in the oven for a while then browned off in a pan for 2 - 3 minutes . I reckon they tasted better just in the pan . These were older quail though and the meat was a bit lighter than the first I ate )

From what Ive read and tried :

1. Do I keep the egg for hatching?
hell yeah , eat or chuck the first weeks worth from each quail though

2. Without an incubator, what's my best hope?
none unless you put one in each armpit for 2 weeks )

3. How do I sex quail... I don't know if the guy said "the lighter coloured one with the small spots is male" or "the males are lighter and have smaller spots.
In a locked room so no-one finds out

4. how much room do I need for them?
1 square foor per bird , not very high cages or they'll jump and break their neck like one of mine did last week

5. how many eggs will they produce?
my laying females started 2 weeks ago and give 3 eggs every two days

6. will they brood much?
not at all

7. can I leave the chicks with the parents?
no

8. should I segregate males from females or just keep the ration of 1:3?
yes , segregate - females in one cage and males in the freezer . Or keep the ratio at 1:4 or 1:5

9. Am I in over my head?
no , you want to breed rabbits , these are easy compared to that ( I think )

also :

I turn mine 3x a day , sometimes more , when I remember

first batch I hatched in a small esky with a 75w globe suspended over it , computer fan wired to a cordless drill battery , all inside another bigger esky with a blanket covering it just enough to get the temp right . Shipped eggs 1 day in the mail , hatched 50% , 2 retards ( bent necks ), but they both tasted the same as the non-retards

second and third batch were in my bar fridgebator , 50% hatch on the 2nd lot , eggs shipped from victoria ,
third batch 30% hatch , shipped eggs same as the first lot - 1 day in the post , its possible I upset their incubation by sticking them in a week after the 2nd lot and havign to bother them when the 2nd lot hatched which gave such a low hatch rate

4th lot I just hatched was a measley 17 out of 50 eggs , but they were 9 days old when I got them , so ten days at incubation .
Of that 4 were retards , unable to stand up and rolled around on their back into and out of the water , then some lovely person decided they were cold at 30+ degrees and put the lid on more , cooking another 4 ...
9 out of 50 is still good for 10 day old eggs that were free as far as I care though , they'll still taste good for xmas dinner

Still havent set any of my own eggs , Im still eating the first lot of eggs from the layers and working out which ones I want to breed , but should start in a week or two

thanks Boris...
Photos would be great. I happen to have a spare dead freezer... chest freezer, 400x400x800 deep
getting the temp right I thought I could do... turning them was my fear.
I don't want to do it manually, but if you have a mechanism that lets you rotate a dowel, then I could just whack a motor on that...
Still with the amount of stuff I have on, I may just buy an incubator.

Like Boris says you can make one with a light socket and a wafer thermostat. Thats what I have in the cage house as a brooder. You may be able to wire up an old computer fan also, which is what I was thinking to upgrade mine. I still like the care free part of the egg turner. Not turning the eggs enough is what supposedly causes spraddle leggs. With the auto turner I still get 2 or 3 out of 50 with spraddle legs. I also lost one by getting mashed by the auto turner which I understand you should stop turning 3-4 days before hatching.

yeah... I've read that they can get trapped in the egg turners, also no you say crushed. Most sources recommend removing the turner 3 days prior to hatching, for these reasons and those of clenliness... turners can get mucky with egg junk.

Yes, and I just tried to find where I read that not turning enough atributed to spraddle legs and all I found was too high incubator temps and slippery footing afterwards as to the causes. Must have been the sale ad.

the male and two females seem to live outside in the weather, whilst one female has taken over the entire enclosed area.
Yet still no eggs.
Do I need to provide separate quarters for these birds? will they not snuggle inside togethter?
