I am currently new to this forum site but very interested in aquaponics. My dad and I are thinking about doing aquaponics at our new house. He said he doesn't want to do tilapia. I on the other hand think it would be the better option because it seems inexpensive. Would we be able to start out with tilapia and then switch to trout later on or no?
Thanks for the advice ahead of time!

Depends on your system and where it's located also on what type of Tilapia. Tilapia are warm water fish (minimum temp around 50 to 55F except for blue tilapia which can go lower) while Trout are coldwater fish (maximum temp around 75F). There is an overlap where both could do OK (right around 70 degrees) but unless the system is inside you might have a tough time maintaining the conditions that would work for both. Of course if you don't like the taste of Tilapia like maybe your dad doesn't, that could be an issue as well.

You should look into Yellow Perch, Channel Catfish and Bluegill as other options if temperature looks like it's going to be an issue.

I would add bullhead and largemouth bass to the list of fish to consider. Bullhead are smaller than channel cats but hardier. Bass are like bluegill but grow bigger and require higher-quality food.
