I've been trying to get some to grow from bits of organic sweet potato that are half in a cup of water - I've got 3 different types - some on the kitchen window sill, some on the water heater outdoors and none of them are growing shoots that I can take cuttings from - they've been in for 3+ weeks now.

Is there a trick I'm missing?

Also I see on the Gardening Australia site:

http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/vegieguide/

That 'SP can also be grown as an aquatic vegetable in fully submerged pots' has anyone tried this before in an AP system?

could be too cold. If they were sourced from interstate they could have been treated that may affect the viability of the eyes but I would put my money on the cold.

I think the ones on the wwater heater are about 30 degs so wouldn't have thought that was too cold. Maybe not as 'organic' as advertised!

sweet potato grow like a weed. I just stuck a branch in the ground and off it went. Months later when it took over my footpath I pulled it all out, or I thought I did because there were tubers under my footpath I couldn't get to that sprung up new shoots everywhere...
I wouldn't waste valuable AP space and nurtients on it. Put it in soil.

Yeah most would go in the soil, though I have excess nitrates in one system at present and if its possible to grow them in water then it would take up no GB space.

Plus I liked the idea of a gardening challenge/growing in a different manner.

And I've not got much soil space left as I've converted it all to AP :shifty:

Mattyoga ,it works very well in AP but uses a bit of water. Produce is very good in hydroton though. Lots of sweet potato in our system after about 4 months :)

K98, you want to be planting out sweet potatoes as the weather warms around september in arid areas.
