Has anybody grown wintergreen in their system before? if so, how did it go?

If you mean mints then yes. They grew very well, and started to run all over.

There are a lot of plants called Wintergreen. This apparently used to be another way of saying Evergreen so many plants that kept their leaves in Winter were called this.

Gaultheria procumbens is what I think of as Wintergreen

If you can think of another name for the plant or point us to the plant you're referring to that would help.

I've been running a 450 gallon aquaponics tank for 4 years and still feel like an absolute idiot. Our tomatoes and herbs did well in summer but the winter vegetables did not. During the winter we would have trouble keeping plants alive in the tank. I live in a warm area that may freeze one time in the winter, but the aquaponics area is fairly sheltered. SO I decided to grow something I can't kill up there, mint. I have peppermint and another mint up there along with some strawberries and a cucumber that are leggy but not producing. My fish started dying, so I got the water tested (it was fine) and got more. Then they started dying too. Is the mint killing them? Sigh... It had to be too good to be true. The mint is growing like fire up there. We have a bell valve that keeps it (usually) circulating well.

Growing mint wont kill them, I have one GB full of it, actually, it's overflowing into adjoining GBs! Maybe if you squeezed out some mint oil into the water you would get some deaths.

Thank you so much. I'll keep looking for answers and let the mint go crazy. It's by far the happiest plant I've ever grown lol and I love mint tea. The side of the tank is protected from sun by a piece of plywood and it was off for 2 days, I just have a hard time thinking 2 days of sun would have killed the fish. The algae has grown. Do any of you combat algae efficiently? I am thinking about raising catfish to take care of it, also looked at those cute Luffy Marimo Moss balls that are supposed to curb algae growth.

2 days of sun could have caused the water temperature to rise significantly in a small system. Too fast a rate of temperature change is very stressful to fish, who mostly live in an environment of very slow temperature change.
