Image this is a really simple trap i built a few years ago. Iit works really nice for small fish(crappie, bluegill, perch) up to catfish, turtles, and crawfish nd crabs. We put it on its side for turtles nd crawfish. I used to use a triangle trap which is similar to what u have but i dont lose anything on the draw in unless a catfish has bent the openning. I really enjoyed ur thread here. Great to see ur kids with you.

If anyone gets caught with a trap like that here we would end up in court with a big fine

You want to talk nets..... I can talk nets!

I believe laws in Australia around nets have been brought in due to the harm they can cause on other aquatic life, like turtles, platapus and alike. This info is really quite broad and different laws apply to different states due the previous mentioned and you should always contact your state government or fisheries dept body before purchasing a net and or trapping.

In regards to fresh water crabs, yabbies, gilgies, koonacs, redclaw, marron etc

Heres Charlies trap net montage....

Legal Yabby Trap (Opera house style trap)
Although a legal yabby trap in inland waters of Australia, it has been known to drown small turtles. When using traps like these its best to use soap for bait instead of meat. It actually works better and doesn't attract turtles.
Note the relatively small metal rings at each end that the Yabby must climb through making it impossible for medium and large turtles to gain access through.

Legal Bait Traps (Concertina)
Available in a variety of colours and great for catching feeder fish and freshwater prawns. Use sunlight soap for fish and for freshwater prawns.

Illegal Yabby Trap (Opera House style trap)
Many freshwater turtles have drowned because of these traps being left in dams or rivers overnight. The turtles are easily able to push through the long horizontal slit at each end.

Illegal Crab Trap
These Crab Traps are illegal in any inland waterways (freshwater) of Australia. I have personally seen many turtles drowned in these traps as well.

Illegal Drum Net
This trap/net pictured is a relatively small one. I have seen large ones with 44 Gallon Drums used for the trap entry. This type of trap can catch and drown anything from freshwater Turtles to Platypus and diving birds, including Cormorants and Darters.

Illegal Fyke Net
These traps/nets are illegal in Australia unless permits have been granted by Fisheries and local wildlife authorities and displayed on the net. These nets/traps are commonly used for scientific purposes (RESEARCH) by scientists and researchers. They can only be purchased in N.Z and shipped to Australia. The end usually has a large float in it to allow any animal trapped in it to come to the surface to breathe. These traps catch a lot of Turtles and Platypus. Some Fyke nets have 'wings' coming off the sides or a single strip of netting extending from the middle of the front of the trap. These extra lengths of netting work like a barrier that the animals swim along until they enter the trap. This extra netting makes the net extremely efficient.

Drop nets (ring nets)
Legal in all states, pose no threat to aquatic life. Dropped from boat or thown from shore line, very effective and favourite amoungst trappers. Colapsable net when set. I have many of these and are fantastic.

Pyramid nets.
Legal in some states, relatively new net on the market, almost got pushed through government without ban but decided on possibility of harm to turtles and alike. It isnt in a colapsed state whilst set like the ring net so could cause hang up. Lucky for us fishing Dams it is fine to use and I grade these nets as the best on the market.

Are you getting your information concerning TRAPS from a knowledgeable fisheries person Charlie? i have always been under the impression that any traps apart from small bait traps are illegal in all PUBLIC water ways/bodies of Western Australia so you may only use them in privately owned dams.

Ur fyke nets we use for catfish on rivers nd u arent kidding they r effective. Ur pyramid traps ive been using since a kid (almost 40 yrs) to crab. They r very effective i like to pin a piece if liver around a chicken wing nd let it soak. Checking about every 15 mins. Ive never seen one like ur drum net. Where does the bait go?? They look easy to make.

So can you catch turtles in australia? We have a very short season here. Im sure you have seen the guy down the road on tv :/ . The turtleman. He is nuts. We use traps for em nd i havent drowned ne yet but we r checking every few hours.

Jeez, thats all you took from that JB... glad I went to the effort. :angryfire:

To answer your question, its called the fisheries dept... and I have some close ties with local police. And no, its not illegal in WA to trap yabbies with a net.... unless you are doing it on someone elses land. Its illegal to "farm" yabbies within the ecological boundary that extends from Perth through the towns of Boddington, Marradong, Quindanning, Darkan, Durandin, Quindalup, Frankland, Rocky Gulf and Mount Barker which is aimed to protect our eco-systems and native species particularly the Marron.

But as per my first paragraph...

Interesting info on the nets Charlie. The nets we use are sort of like a rectangular based pyramid, with one long opening at the top.

Anyway, we've had a fair bit of rain down here and there's been good run-off into the farm dams. I noticed something interesting today, a yabby wandering up a very shallow/narrow stream flowing into a dam. I followed the stream for a bit and found there were heaps of yabbies all making their way upstream away from the dam. It was barely a trickle of a stream, maybe 20cm wide, and they were pretty vulnerable to anything that might have wanted to eat them. Any idea what would cause this behaviour? :dontknow:

Definitely incorrect - 2 minutes on the WA Fisheries site will show you that.
