I have done a lot of research online and have built a IBC tote aquaponics system and have had some success. My successes follow:

1. All 10 tilapia fish are alive and healthy going on 2 weeks now
2. The flood and drain system seems to be working

However, I am at a stand still in terms of improving and expanding my system and would like to meet folks in the Houston/Katy area who are doing aquaponics. I am interested in seeing their system and having them critique my system.

Please feel free to reply to this post or you may call or text me direct.

Hi ldjones, I'm in Pearland but I am still in the research / fundraising stage. I plan on putting in a 3 growbed tote system. I am planning to have it operational by October. -Glen

Lyndon,

Thanks for showing us around this weekend. Yours is the first working aquaponics system we've seen.

Thanks. I am hopeful we can get a local network in the Houston metro of folks doing the same thing and possibly get a monthly dinner club going with a different couple hosting each month. This would provide a great social and learning environment on the topic gardening and aquaponics. Talk with you soon.

I had missed this e-mail, but I know of four others in the Houston area.

Myself, Sugar Land, Greatwood Subdivision
Merlin... Clear Lake/ Nasa area
Smith-n-fiddle in the Alief area
Deja-Voodoo lives somewhere up towards spring.

I know that I have misspelled their user ID's likely, but they have all been respondents to my build thread.

I'd like to have a tour day, or start some kind of local club type thing. It could be fun. I know the next few weeks are out for me, but after that I should be available.

Richard,

Let's do it. See if the others are interested and I am happy to kick it off in August. Please give me a call when it is convenient.

I'd also like to be involved in a Houston group. I have years of experience with organic gardening, hydroponics and freshwater fish keeping so it seems natural to put them together. I'm in the planning/funding stages for a toteponics system, as well, and would like to meet others for hear advice, suggestions, etc.

My system is on the verge of being dismantled, but I have a freezer full of fish I can show off. It has been too hot to work outside lately, but I have a big system planned. Sometime this fall I hope to be running again. Count me in for the tour if later in the year.

sminfiddle (or Rick) is the Alief guy.

What kind of fish made it to the freezer?

I know I still have frozen tilapia and catfish. I think there is still some trout left. I have cooked trout for a few guests though, so we may have gone through it all. My focus on the next system will be mostly catfish year round. If, with the GH I can keep temps up year round, I'll do tilapia again also. They are an excellent fish!

I also did bluegill, but I lost that batch early on and did not see much growth out of them. Tilapia and cats grew the best. The trout I bought already plate size and did not see them increase much in size over the winter. The season for them was pretty short though. The problem with trout in this area is the cold season is far too short. Tilapia are at the other end of the spectrum hate it when it gets cold. With a little extra heat though, I pretty sure they could be kept year round.

You can add me to the Houston/Katy list too. I started a small system on the roof in Dubai - it barely got cycled before I had to dismantle and move. Now in Hong Kong where I don't have any space for a system. Moving back home to Houston next month and, once we buy a house and get all our stuff off of that slow boat from China, - I plan on starting it up again. I have no contact info yet but will be living in the Memorial area.
