Imagine working for US$2.50 an hour, or working two jobs and only having one weeks' paid leave a year. Imagine pinching pennies for over 12 months to buy a second-hand car, and then having to blow all your hard-earned savings on a gall bladder operation because you didn't have health cover. For Allen, Iris and Dolores, this is their reality.

And even though they don't complain, life with barely any rights at work is not a pretty picture.

Watch Allen, Iris and Dolores' story on 7.30 Report, ABC, on Tuesday night (July 31).

The ACTU are currently hosting the three minimum wage workers from America. They are touring round Australia, sharing their stories about what life is like for them back in the States.

I've been known to rant to my kids and friends in general about what I see as the Americanisation of Australian culture... and attribute it the mind numbingness of constant drivel from Austar and the general cult of the celebrity....

I kid you not.... this is a direct quotation from the Kiama High School Newsletter Term 3 - Week 3A...... from the Principal's Desk ....

Quote:
Whilst on health issues. I have received a request from the emergency services to remind you and your children that the emergency phone number in NSW is 000 not 911.

There have been several dangerous situations where emergency services have not been alerted because callers are using the wrong number

God help us.... what are we doing to this country and our children

it seems everyone hates america these days i guess. Michael Moore seems to hate it the most. i seen a few of his movies, he seems like a socialist to me. capitalism fuels many new medical advances. i would hate to see government run heathcare in this country. just as in america people blame cheap china made goods for loss of industry, other contries seem to blame america for kids doing things they see on tv. usa exports media all over the world and people keep buying it. maybe it should be treated as a drug. i love freedom, but it comes with a price. people have the right to not work hard and blame everyone else for them not having stuff. i dont know how other states work, but here nobody is denied heath care just becuse they can not pay. i think the united states is becoming more divided every year. seems half the country wants the government to control them, and the other half dont. i know i dont want some government worker deciding my healthcare needs.

WOW, the impression i got was that it was the opposite! Can there be such disparity between the states? I'd love for someone to clear that one up.

I agree with capitalism fueling many advances, unfortunalty in the medical field it seems to be primarily pharmaceuticals. Somebody please correct me if i am wrong, but OZ pioneered a few surgical miracles, and our medical system is gov. run ?

I may be in over my head, as politics and all things social are sooooo not my thing ;) :)

But a government healthcare worker has little care about the cost of the treatment for the patient, they just want the best treatment so the person is healthy.. The privatised health care worker is working for a company who's sole purpose is to make money, so they have to cut corners whereever possible and deny service wherever possible, to make more profits for the share holders..

The Doco is really worth watching, although it can be a little sensationalist in typical Michael Moore fashion, the basic facts behind it are undeniable, and it's a real eye opener..

I'm not sure that Rupert is saying he hates America, I think it's more a case of hating the way that Australia is losing it's identity and allowing itself to become a brain washed sheep to popular commercial television.. The fact that it's American tv shows is beside the point..

it does not work that way. when you go to the clinic or hospital, the healthcare worker does not work for the people who pay your bill. weather you have medicare, medicade, company provided health insurance,....ect. hospitals, doctors, and clinics compete with each other for your bussiness. they in turn bill your health insurance for the care provided. my job provides me with full medical covrage, i consider that part of my pay. i have had jobs with no medical benifits, and i did not stay with them. for people in the usa who work for less then minimum wage and no heathcare, they have many ways to change that. in the usa anyone who works hard, takes every opportunity given to them, and does not expect everything to be handed to them, it is easy to live a good life. the company i work for now has hired kids just out of school, paying them $15-$25 an hour. about 8 out of 10 soon quit becuse the job is to "hard". too many dont think they should have to work for lifes necessities. every week over $600 of my paycheck goes to fedral taxes, a big chunk of that goes to give food, money, and healthcare to people too lazy to work. dont get me wrong, i have no problem giving help to someone who really needs it, but from what ive seen most people on welfare could prolly work. in las vegas, not being able to find a job is no excuse, there are more jobs there than people. they pay people $15hr to hold a advertisement on the side of the road. yet i see people standing on the side of the road begging for money all the time. if someone can stand all day to beg, can they not work? the us spends 748 billion on welfare, that is just fedral money, that does not include state money. id rather see alot of that spent on other things. if that could be cut by 1/4 and the 532.8 Billion spent on the military cut by 1/4 and the savings be spent on things like repairing roads and providing loans to renewable energy projects, that would be better.

But the health care worker has to know before hand whether the insurance company will be willing to pay for the healthcare provided.. The healthcare provider will not provide health care to someone if they don't have insurance, because then they will be losing money...

The Doco showed a number of cases where sick people were removed from hospital, put in a taxi, and taken off and dropped on the street because there were issues with payment for treatment.. The insurance companies employ small armies of specialists to try and find any means possible of denying expensive medical procedure to their members.. And some of the examples shown on the doco were frightning.

I feel that health and education should be a right of every person, and I really hope our government don't head any further down the path of privatising health. If that makes me a socialist, labels don't worry me... :)

I quite like the "work for the dole" scheme we have here. Yes you can be an unemployed person and receive the dole, but you have to do some community work to get it, thats a great idea because generally people then figure they are better off getting a better paid real job..

Saw peoplle in canada last year beging on the street (middle of winter!) one man sitting barefoot ! cos im an AP insomniac ,noticed about 2am someone arrived to give him his shoes! Then he got up and walked away! Was supposedly a cripple! I think it would be easier to work for a living than sit on the footpath in middle of winter barefoot!!!
