and now we have the anti-vacination crowd.... short term memory of things like polio, german meazles etc etc

I bought 10 tons of screened landscape soil yesterday, when I called to order they told me straight up that they work on 1 ton is 1.3 cub metres of soil.

ummm....somthing not right there. Density of dry, loose sand is around 1.3 to 1.4 tonnes per m3.
must be some special light weight stuff they have there..... perhaps it was the work experience girl...

par for the modern factual customer service we enjoy these modern times.

This message started out as a blerb about going to the fair trade ombudsman, but I remembered something from a news (or news-like) thing I saw on TV 30 years ago or so...

Apparently you can advertise things like "Biggest tons in Victoria" when selling firewood by the (not weighed) container.

It turns out in Australia, a court recognised the use of the word "ton" to just mean "Sh%tload (or stack, or similar) and as such has another meaning other than that thing North Americans measure big weights with.

So I did a little extra research and found that basically, in Australia, you need to look for the word "Tonne".

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia on the subject of "ton" ...

"
Not to be confused with Tonnage or Tonne.

For other uses, see Ton (disambiguation).

The ton is a unit of measure. It has a long history and has acquired a number of meanings and uses over the years. It is used principally as a unit of mass. Its original use as a measurement of volume has continued in the capacity of cargo ships and in terms such as the freight ton. It can also be used as a measure of energy, for truck classification, or as a colloquial term.

"

So I guess the Court was forced to rule the word "'ton" as pretty much meaningless here, because the seller can cherry-pick whatever definition is best for them on the day.

Gumtree people are annoying.

I had some tomato seedlings I'd rather give away than throw out.

So I put them on gumtree for $1 each. Super cheap for tomatoes, and if they are in the free section, you get more weirdos.

The amount of people who ring up and asking me to deliver them for them. "I'll take 5 if you can delivery them for me". No, I'm not going to drive 40 minutes to your house for $5 worth of seedlings.

What's 80 min of your time worth? just add that to the price and they'll soon come up with a solution.

Pete :)

That's the way I try and figure it. And then others who want me to meet them half way, because they are 40 minutes away.

Seriously, go to bunnings, you can buy a tommie toe seedling for $3.

Put them out next to your letterbox and ask people to be honest and slip a dollar under your door.

Most people are either decent, or not gardeners.

I spoke to a guy who sold strawberries on the side of the road, and he said he almost never lost stock, but would lose the money box a few times a year.

Has anyone ever, in the entire history of internet, said "Gee yeah, I've just visited yet another website with an annoying popup asking for me to subscribe with my email address 5 seconds after arriving, that's a good idea, sure.."???

Those are one of my favorites but it's the ones that don't let you get rid of the popup without joining that really annoy me.

Yeah, those are the absolute best, aren't they Scotty?!

I've subscribed to a lot of websites that had interesting stuff on them. I've never given my email address to a website that wouldn't let me access things without it. :-P

The worst of the worst are the ones where they collect information off the web and make you join to access it. Initially these don't require joining so they can build up their hit counts. They usually accumulate the information in a useful way but after a while you can only find the information on their site and the original location of the information isn't getting as many hits and doesn't show up in a search.
