As opposed to the Liberatarians.... who would never have got as far as considering whether or not it was a joke...

Because they would have launched into a utopian philosophical frothing.. at the mere sight of the word "government".. in a sentence... :D

Gotta admit that was a dodgy link last time.
But I thought I'd dredge up this thread again to link these ones instead.
Apparently landowners in several states of the US haven't had the water rights to the water off their roof in a century or so. According to the unenforced letter of the law.

The people who are affected by those laws ought to strongly consider suing the state when their land is flooded by government owner water.

I need a new phrase.

It's all a load of pinko commie tree hugging hippy crap covers most bases from the silly to the down right idiotic from what is traditionally termed the "left" or "environmentalist". I don't like those labels because even if they did mean something once they have less relevance today.

Where I need a new phrase is to cover silliness and stupidity coming from the other direction.

What has brought home to me the need for said phrase is the naviety and narrow mindedness of the previous links. These people seem to think that anything that they don't like is bad and that any regulation by the government is evil. They really need to think beyond their own self interest.

Who says that you own the rain that falls on your property. Why is it an inherent property right?

By this logic South Australia can just go and get stuffed because all the water that they currently use to supply communities from Adelaide to Mildura (close to several million people and businesses) falls in QLD, NSW and Vic. Rather than whinging about how they deserve a fair share of our nations resources they should buy the water off the states that own it because it fell on their land.

Thankfully such a resolution is not even humourously considered.

Does this mean that all rain water use should be regulated? I don't think so but our actions can affect our neighbours. A household sees no harm and much good for themselves and others by installing a rain water tank to catch their run off. It may be true that this may be a good thing not just for them but their community because it reduces water run off and perhaps this is a good thing. I say perhaps because it may not be. For example if every household and business in Melbourne harvested rain off their roofs what will this do to Port Phillip Bays ecology. For starters their wlll be an increase in its salinity. Also there may be an effect from storm water only flowing into the bay during large storms and flushing out a build up of waste and muck that has accumulated due to reduced flows through the storm water infrastructure due to increased rain water harvesting.

The former will probably shift the hydrodynamics closer to what they were before the run off of storm water was vastly increased due to all the hard surfaces that have been formed in the city. This may be good it may not. What is likely is that it will be good for some things and not others. The later effect is the potentially more dangerous one. Are either of these effects something we should be concerned about, I have no idea. I don't even know if they will be significant but they are real effects that would be caused by the actions of a whole stack of individuals.

The point I am trying to make is that people should really think before they froth at the mouth. Are they indignant for selfish reasons or because their inherent rights as a human and citizen have been unjustly infringed upon.
