I agree totally Stuart... Tried to say similar things about 3 pages back..

Mans inherent greed becomes more apparent as community conscience gives way to "self" more and more.

I live in a community that falls apart every time it rains. Here rain water catchment is for the good of the community. The waste water management infrastructure is way undersized for the amount of hard scape our community has, and the ground is not exactly pervious. Any way to take what comes down rarely but in large quantities, and reintroduce to he ground slowly is good. Thankfully the lawmakers here are receptive to that. Especially because we DO have to pay other states for water. Our county even has an ordinance that says that we can hook our washing machine outlet to a sprinkler to water our lawns, no permit necessary.

No single drop of rain believes it is responsible for the flood.

Sounds good to me. The only water I have for my house is rain water that collects off the roof. I am in the process of building a swale across the slope of my back yard which will allow my to collect and capture significant runoff during storms.

Uptil now I had not proceeded with the idea because I thought it a bit rood because that water would then travel into my neighbours dam. However, since said neighbour sabotaged the collection system that I had to collect water off my shed roof and because of we ran out of water and had to buy it in my concern for the level of water in their dam has gone out the window.

I take it then your only point in the humorous and lengthy post was:-

"The point I am trying to make is that people should really think before they froth at the mouth. Are they indignant for selfish reasons or because their inherent rights as a human and citizen have been unjustly infringed upon."

Or was it the complaint about people objecting to certain rules and regulations? :)

Define what you think are inherent human rights and why as a citizen you should not be able to speak out against what you perceive as unjust laws or unjust application of those laws. (BTW that is two questions) :)

Yes, I see now the errors of my ways. Thank you for opening my eyes.
I see how all those with water tanks are selfish bastards, taking the communally owned water that belongs to all comrades. Vandalising our environment and destroying ecosystems.
I wipe the self righteous froth from my mouth in shame...

Seriously though, you know full well that rooftop rainfall makes a minute percentage of Murray river flow. Pretty sure river dams and industrial farming are much more relevant to river flow issues, and decades of drought might have also contributed. Household water tanks wouldn't change ocean or bay salinity by any measurable amount.

I'll play devil's advocate for a minute and use a similar argument style to show how overly intellectualised arguments can be turned against aquaponics (or any subject at all) by others.

Okay then, lets start with the no rainwater decision. Now you get to use the chlorinated and fluoridated water supply for your AP. But the council and by extension, the community, have spent much money and infrastructure to provide that potable supply for drinking not for fish to pee in! That's a very selfish use of such a precious commodity.
Hmm, that may be construed as illegal water storage or even worse, water HOARDING, I mean who can say that you aren't secretly diverting rain water? Oh well, to be fair the council had better disallow private water storage. Just to be certain and fair to all. So no, you may not store water in tanks, ponds or IBCs.

Concerned citizens may think that a garden is a source of pests and vermin. Perhaps citing a particular example to ram home the point to the non-gardening public.
The pest species (rats, mice, birds, insects, DISEASE! PLAGUE! PESTILENCE!) are a clear threat to public health. the pest species displace and kill native species.
Ipso facto gardens are bad. Especially food producing gardens as these attract and house pest and pestilent species much more.
Maybe we, the community should be nice and not ban gardens completely but charge for a licence and quarterly checks of the garden for signs of pestilence. If found scorched earth policy should be applied to prevent spread of the problem.
But since these biological threats pose a clear danger to farms and threaten the security of the community food supply, in hindsight, no, we have to ban gardening too. Sorry about that.

And now onto the animal welfare points and biosecurity risks of private animal possession, etc, etc, etc...
ad nauseum

Ok, that's all kinda ludicrous.
But I see very little difference between that and the response which I parodied.
I hope it wasn't too personal an attack, and I do agree that a spirit of working for the greater good and preventing personal behaviour from adversely affecting other people or the environment is crucial. When there is evidence that a behavioural choice will result in a bad outcome I avoid it.
It's all good that you don't mind being told what to do. No problem at all.
I do care though and resent any unnecessary micromanagement of my life by some bureaucrat.

I am not a farm animal or somebody's pet dog.
I am not a slave.
I am free, man. :headbang:

Oh... you use rainwater, carve up the earth with abandon to collect all water and have no regard for your neighbour, the impacts of your actions on the pre-existing body of water on their land and (which may breach state laws on dams and water storage - modification of which requires approval)
I'm not embarrassed to admit your previous post now confuses me.
Oh! Hang on, you're like me and we're both arguing a silly point aren't we...
Damn, I gotta stop this... (slinks back into the shadows...)

Yeah Rupe, being a free man can be expensive eh? :laughing3:

Did I say arrogant? Pretty sure I did that one too...

I guess people who know me would recognise that I get pretty reactive if I feel I've been insulted. Gotta grow a thicker internet skin and not take things to heart. :D
