Having read the report, I need to understand which countries are now the worlds leading exporters Since the big countries are now net importers of the staples and it seems all the big producers are not producing as much as they should, Have the statisticians taken over? I mean, where's it all coming from :dontknow:

Interesting article... some of the photos were a bit emotionally charged, but a good reminder why we do what we do nonetheless

Wonder how much Monsanto put down for this report and its publication?

We are surrounded by arable food production areas within our cities, we just don't use them, nor will we until it becomes a necessity. It would help if local councils would begin planting fruit and nut trees in public areas. There was a woman I watched a talk on a while back from England, they were planting food gardens all over their town.

It is policy to not do this.

Fruit trees make a mess after all.

So bring on the Guerilla Gardening I say, It is pretty cheap and easy to raise some fruit and nut trees from seed or cuttings at home., wait until they get large enough to survive with out artificial watering and find a sneaky piece of public open space to chuck them into.

I reckon once they look like they belong there the local council won't notice and they will grow to maturity

The good thing about science is that you don't have to believe in it for it to be right.

What mess?

The only problem I could see is controlling fruit fly and probably teenagers from picking and throwing the fruit instead of eating it.

BTW there are grapevines growing in parks where I currently live.

There are olive trees around spearwood, used as street trees, every season you see people out picking bucket s of them.. I just started eating the olives from my tree... :)

I didn't say it was a good policy.

Plums, pears, apple and many other trees used to be planted around here but because we live in such a wealthy society even those on the dole don't bother picking the fruit so most of it rots on the ground.

Last season I picked about 1000kg of apples for cider I good have easily got another 2000kg.

Slightly off topic ,but our only super market yesterday had an electrical fire, now we have lost our convenient shopping....thank goodness I bulk buy meat and grow a few vegies and have a few feral chickens. So easy to take things for granted.

* first we had a roller on the back of a truck back into one of 2 service stations a few months ago...fuel shortage to the max

* then the kids set the Shire alight ( No Loss, still have the same morons in power )

* Now no supermarket....

got to love home food production :)
