The world's first portable, scalable, stand-alone aquaponics system squishes a 2.5-acre farm into a semitrailer.

The shipping container holds as many as 3,100 fish and 13,000 plants, and one 30- by 40-foot system can feed 500 people every week.

Feed 500 people every week from an area 30 by 40 foot..??? Maybe a lettuce leaf each.. :dontknow:

This is disturbing..

One Portable HAT Farm retails for between $135,000 and $140,000, delivered anywhere in the world, Cox said.

Cox said the system uses groundbreaking techniques, and all manufacturing will be in-house in order to protect the science behind the system.

Equivalent to 2.5 acres.... 100,000 sq ft... 10,000 sq mtr...

One 30 x 40 ft system.... 1200 sq ft... 110 sq mtr ... feeds 500 people.... sure...

You might pack the tanks, rafts and filters etc... in a shipping container/semi trailer.... which is transportable...

This is better than the one fish for 10 litres of water, min 31 IBC in a shipping container plus grow beds and filtration. Has to be a big shipping container

A high cube 40' contains about 76 m3. About 4 of them would go into a 30' by 40' system. Feeding 500 people weekly might be possible, if it's not daily. :D

Ryan is fishing for a 30 to 40 million $ incentive from the state, although he already is completely funded. And oh, he wants to bring the company public in 2014 but keeps a major stake. What do banks and venture capitalists know about AP? Enough to look through, or just too little to get it? The future will tell.

Anyway, the highly sophisticated scientific systems will be fully produced in-house to keep the secrets safe. Secrets, secrets, secrets. Magic word for fast Eddie's on the money run. Who cares?

Jeez... you guys have no imagination. 3100 fish to grow the 13,000 plants. You crop the heads and sell them locally - grown sensibly that's 1000 per week (allowing for a 13 week seed-to-smokable-heads cycle) and at at least a kilo per plant, that's 1000kg of primo crop per week, at $300 per kg, $300,000 PER WEEK.

If you can't feed 500 people on that you should go find a nice quiet corner to sit in. :D

Of course you need to get in early - once the market is saturated the price per kilo will plummet. :laughing3:

But that only puts more pressure on the food problem if everyone gets hunger attacks after smoking... ;-)

Yes, you got it! Feed them once a week! :D
Maybe he can have them fight for food and sell the broadcasting rights in a "Hunger Games"-like style to make his 40 million $.

I seriously doubt even 500 people could get $300,000 worth of munchies attack. :D And think of the revenue generation possibilities as all those dope-fiends head on out to buy hamburgers and chips and cakes and...

It'd be an economic boom - the banks would be starved of money as the cash was turned over rapidly.

I wonder what would happen to this guys company if me or another designer just free sourced a similar design that fits in a shipping container? 40 mil? I'll bet that would feed the local homeless for quite sometime.
