Cheers from New England. I was just wondering if a lot more people in Australia eat lamb? Here in the US, the consumption of lamb is really limited. I never had it much, until this year. My kids raise lamb for their farm projects. So now we have lamb from the freezer to eat and more to come! We love lamb, when I make it the kids even ask if we can have it the next day. I am cooking a leg of lamb roast for dinner this afternoon and it smells so good!

So who loves lamb? What are your favorite lamb dishes? Does anyone raise lambs or have sheep?

i have a farm that runs 100 head of breeding sheep.

nothing beta than a lamb on a spit as the lambs come into season and few people around to share it with.

Nice lamb roast is Australian as a cold beer on a hot day. Roast, left over meat for a salad or sandwich, curry or pasta dish, sausages, kebabs, patties/ rissoles the list is endless.

yup love the lamb, but personally prefer hogget (2 year old)
slightly firmer- bit less snotty as my dad puts it -

i grew up on a sheep farm out of Perth so we always had mutton in the freezer, my mum used to make little pancake things with left over lamb chunks in it

dad likes to poke garlic and rosemary into a roast and then cover the whole thing with apricot jam surprisingly nice better if you can do it without burning the jam too much but still good all the same

hmmmm its breakfast time here and now i feel like chops ....

That is great and the video was a hoot. 100 ewes must sure keep you busy! Hogget is a word almost completely unknown in the US, I only ran across it in books about raising sheep. Now I know what to do with those yearlings that aren't being judged well at the shows! Good to also know that that lamb is appreciated around the world.

We have a few ewes due next month. (Lambing season has just started here.) Can't wait to see the new little critters when they're born.

Lamb sandwiches, now I know what we're having for lunch tomorrow! :thumbright:

Its odd that lamb cutlets are so expensive now in Australia but you can still get the cheaper cuts for the barbie and leg is still affordable (nice and pink inside). :)

That must be a C.W.A thing , my Granny does a mutton fritter out of left-overs , mmmm a firm favourite.

So lamb can be for breakfast...why not??? Funny how the local culture limits your ideas on things like that!

Price, it's probably one reason why lamb consumption is so limited here. Leg of lamb goes for $8-9 per pound USD, so a typical price is like $75 for a whole leg of lamb. Rack of lamb can be about $15 per pound! Compare that to beef that is around $5/lb. for roasts. Beef steaks are expensive, probably $12-15/lb. but so much more available. Most of the supermarket lamb is from New Zealand.

My kids calculated the cost to raise their lambs, (buying a weanling, feeding it, and butcher costs, etc.) and it works out to $2/lb. :shock: But there is a lot of work to it, well worth it as aquapons know with raising your own fish and veggies! So I am very happy to have them raise lamb. This year we will have our own born here so that will maybe lower the cost, but there are lambing expenses, etc. So we will see!

I love all the info, videos, and favorite recipes for lamb! :cheers:

Well I'm not in Australia, but I love the stuff. I used to work in a restaurant they'd do lamb chops Wellington. That was awesome! It's been too long. I had some in Tortola the other day too. absolutely love the stuff!

If you want to do leg roast, just a bit of oil, rosemary and salt on the outside and cook it till the outside is a little crispy and the inside is pink. Have it with roast vegies and mushy peas.Get some mint sauce, not the real pussy stuff that's all sweet but one with a bit of bite (or make it yourself). Don't put the mint sauce over everything, only the mushy peas. Eat some of your leg au natural, then try a bit with the mushy peas. If you are real juvenile, like I am, when you have finished the leg, mash everything up on the plate and enjoy (It makes plate cleaning a lot easier too) :)

If you want something a little different try moussaka (Shepherds pie with a twist) or if you like Indian food, Rogan Josh (mind I prefer it with goat).

We love loin chops done on the barbie with homemade tommy sauce (ketchup), and with home grown vegies of course :)

Yep that would do it for me......haven't bought a chop in 25 years :thumbleft:
