Ages ago there was a discussion and given my anal retentive nature I wanted the different regimes defined.

1. Constant flood & constant flow
2. Constant flood & intermittent flow
3. Constant flow, flood and drain.
4. Intermittent flow, flood and drain.

At the time no. 2 was not done but nowadays you could argue that many peoples wicking beds fit this regime, at least for the gravel portion of the bed.

Stuart doesn't usually take sides; he likes maths and would probably think one side of a square is just the same as another. :)

There was no Constant Flood (of GBH ) a while ago on the forum and CF referred to Constant Flow to a lot of older members. That's what some of EB's original beds were. :) :drunken:

I am sure UMM is some sort of a name for an ancient god. :)

However in a square you have the topside, the right side, the left side and the bottom side. Or the south, east, west and north (in the S hemisphere). And if you stand it on its point you have two isosceles triangles joined like siamese twins (it goes on). :drunken:

The sides are the same even though their orientation may be different.

Strangely enough I have a grandson who has two toy giraffes, one is named um and the other umm (my interpretation of how he says it); for the life of me I cannot tell them apart , he can.
I haven't tried him with sides of a square but you never know. :drunken:

I think you are thinking of the ancient Mesopotamian city state of Ur.

Their orientation may be different, but I think they both should have the right to get married.

"I think you are thinking of the ancient Mesopotamian city state of Ur."

Sorry Ron it was Om, I tend to get confused with the giraffes when I'm a bit pissed.

Not sure I'd like to live in Ur, people would think your a lot deaf or a bit simple. :)

I remember having quite a time when I mentioned Constant Flood because some people thought I meant water just trickling in and draining the whole time so the bed never actually flooded (as in what I guess some people think of as constant flow.)
Anyway, I finally started calling it constant flow/constant flood (as in the stand pipe has no holes in the bottom and there is no bell over it.)

There is of course
constant flow, siphon flood and drain
And
Timed flood and drain (same is intermittent flow, flood and drain)
(I do not support intermittent flow, constant flood)
and
DWC (raft) or NFT which are also constant flow technologies.

If I were to do a recirculating wicking bed, I would have the gravel portion flood and drain rather than leave it flooded but not constant flow since the lower layers would become a bit anaerobic and I don't necessarily want that re-circulating into my systems. In fact the beds where I let the water flood over the gravel a little and set my potted plants and seedling trays do flood and drain and are essentially working like wicking beds, only the "potting mix" or "compost" layer is contained and removable.

They could think want they want, but the first written language came from there and was used relatively unchanged for over 2000 years. Some biblical scholars also believe that that is the city of Moses's birth. It's ziggurat is an incredibly important archaeological site. We actually surrounded it with a military base to prevent looting and such, but have recently released control to the Iraqi ministry of antiquities.

As in "where are you from mate" ... "Ur" ... "I said where are you from mate" ... "Ur" ......"WHERE ARE YOU FROM MATE"... " THE CITY OF UR"... "look if you can't even remember the name of your city you can piss off". :)

Back to risky business

Plant growth and my humble opinion, a list of optimum methods (this assumes a number of other criteria but we shall forget them for the moment) this is first to last.

Aeroponics
Bubble buckets
Continuous flow
NFT
DWC
F&D
Continuous Flood

:)

+1 Stuart

At least this way makes sense.

I remember it being a real pain there for a while as well. Every once in a while it's still a pain, like now

Cheers
