Here's an interesting thread that could cause some controversy! This guy has an AP System on the Sunshine Coast here in Queensland, on his journey of self sufficiency he wanted to breed rabbits for the dinner plate but due to state laws found it to be illegal.... So he opted for Guinea Pigs!!

Would you go as for as eating Guinea Pigs???

I certainly would.
After all, they are a fully domesticated animal and do not occur in the wild.
They were domesticated as a meat animal and I see no difference between them and other livestock.
Except that I can raise them at home.
But since everyone else thinks differently to me I can't see it happening.
To me it's the logical, inexpensive and low carbon footprint choice for urban areas.
But apparently I'd be losing friends if I did. (stoopid community expectations...).
So quail it will be I guess, but guineas would be less hassle I think.

What do they taste like?

I've just been looking at numerous YouTube vids about eating them. So far not one person has said they taste bad, in fact for the most part everyone is enjoying them saying they taste like chicken.

I'd eat them no problem, I see little difference between a guinea pig and say a rabbit. I've seen quite a few shows where they look damn tasty.

I actually watched some food show the other week presented by a French woman, she visited a guinea pig breeder in South America somewhere and they all looked good, healthy and a good amount of meat on them. I think they can be a great animal to farm, particularly for poorer people who cannot afford the investment required for larger livestock. Seemingly good meat for their size, quick growth, prolific breeders, so on. :thumbright:

Yeah most of the YouTube vids are from people visiting South America.

Are they legal? To eat that is.

Horses is eaten in many countries around the world as are dogs but it is illegal to eat them in Australia.

Where do guinea pigs sit or are they just not regulated at all?

Ok so now that I've received 100% optimism regarding the topic so far.... it's time to come clean. I'm seriously considering farming them for personal consumption! I was considering rabbits, but just learnt tonight that they are illegal in Queensland, so I said to the Mrs, "What about Guinea Pigs?"
I started searching the web on the subject and stumbled across this guy.

I certainly would eat them, but like Bodgy said, I might end up losing some friends... Oh well, I think I might actually give this a try!!

I'd be keen to know more but I've got to be careful what I do. My neighbour takes every opportunity to dob me into the authorities so I've got to keep everything above board.

As far as I can tell, they are not illegal to eat as long as they are slaughtered humanely (quick and painless) according to the RSPCA. There is a web article about this guy on the Sunshine Coast eating them and it concludes that they can be slaughtered by the breeder on the breeders property for the breeder or visitors consumption only.

As long as your not taking the meat off your property it's completely legal :)

I think it's legal, but who'd be the best to find out for sure, would it be DEPI?

*edit* As an aside, I just read that both horse and dog meat are apparently legal to eat in Australia, just not sell. If I was on the other computer I'd look into it properly (the one I'm using is a pain), but here are the sites that I read it on:
